A new year rolls around in 9ish hours, so it's time to sum up this years reading
For once I haven't read a lot I hated but I still found things to be snarky about >:3
Favourites
Brainwyrms, Alison Rumfitt
-MY GODS I HAVE NOT STOPPED THINKING ABOUT THIS BOOK EVEN ONCE THIS YEAR (you may even say, heh, I got brainwyrms from it *is shot and killed*). I was shocked from the first sentence, put it down thinking I couldn't handle it, and then read the whole thing in a week due to my insatiable curiosity. everyone should read this book and it's not gonna be fun. take my hand and we'll go through 304 pages of insanity, hard kinks, the author stepping into the story to tell you to touch grass, and a constant crawling sensation of worms trying to get into your brain. 10/10 I can't recommend this book to anyone
Boy Parts, Eliza Clark
-Also a book I haven't stopped thinking about since reading it. Hell, I already wanna reread it. Loved the protagonist and seeing her wreck her life. The eventual reveal was predictable but still shook me (due to its brutality) and I really really liked the way it talked about art and "mental health", iykyk. it was nasty, brutal, and above all a hell of a ride. also 10/10 would recommend to everyone if not for the name
Hated
Andvake, Jon Fosse
-We had to read this at school and I can now confidently say I don't understand how or why he won the Nobel price for literature. The repetition felt purposefully there to annoy me, the depth felt artificial, and just bc you use old words doesn't make you a competent writer. 1/10 for it is a story I suppose
Things have gotten worse since we last spoke, Eric LaRocca
-I was so hyped to read this but once again it's another lie from booktook. the writing was flat, the characters flatter, and pacing felt like an old car with a shitty engine. all of the short stories were weak, and the main story (things have gotten worse) would've benefited from another 60 pages of development. all I can say is that the tapeworm surprised me. 2/10 I shouldve known better considering I heard about it on booktok many years ago
Honerable mentions
Homesick for another world, Ottessa Moshfeng
-In a strange way it was a comforting read. No I will not elaborate
What moves the dead, T. Kingfisher
-Only book I've read that's managed to genuinely startle/jumpscare me
The three body problem, Liu Cixin
-The heaviest book I read this year so I will not continue the series. Very unsuccessfully tried to get my dad to read it
Manga and comic bonus
My lesbian experience with loneliness + My solo exchange diary 1, Nagata Kabi
-NAGATA KABI I OWE YOU MY LIFEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Killing stalking, Koogi
-I was obsessed with this when I was 11 but I only actually read it now. It was fun to relive those childhood memories and getting to know the actual story. I knew how it ended but it still got me teary eyed. absolute trainwreck of a story, 10/10

"just bc you use old words doesn't make you a competent writer" SO TRUE DUDE, it peeves me when people act like a book is the most intelligent piece of work they've ever read forever, and then it's like. oh, you used... a word with a lot of syllables... you purposefully made it repetitive or cryptic and then it was just needlessly confusing.... GREAT
i've never read any of these books but your description of brainwyrms makes me wanna look into it!! i gotta get back into reading :P
happy new year, glad you had fun with all your books!!! :D

EXACTLY!!!! and the man (Jon fosse) doesnt even use punctuation so what the fuck!!! it's not a meaningful lack of punctuation either!!! ig you could argue it's for aesthetic reason but then the story should also be good!
also EEEEEEEEE my influence and power grows stronger!!! Brainwyrms is amazing but it is really really brutal. Some of the content warnings I can think of rn is rape, piss kink, violent transphobia (obviously), scat kink, dead animals, grooming,,,,it's a hell of a ride so if you can take it, take it!!!
