haiiii :p
this is my first blog post and i'm not sure what to post so i'm going to copy/paste my sonic 3 review that i wrote on letterboxd. so if you're interested, here's my review. it contains spoilers:
as someone who's waited over a decade for a movie with shadow in it, i'm thoroughly happy with how this movie panned out.
this movie manages to perfectly blend the emotional beats of shadow's backstory and the silliness of the past 2 movies from this franchise. it's been perfectly casted and i will definitely be re-watching this movie multiple times.
for a start, i've never really liked jim carey. i always thought he was corny and painfully unfunny, but he manages to mostly hit the mark with robotnik in this movie. there's a few jokes that run for too long and become dragged out, but i do think he's perfectly encapsulated robotnik down to the horrendous posture.
additionally, i thought that keanu reeves might have disappointed me like he did with his lackluster performance in the sonic x shadow generations dlc, but he portrayed shadow perfectly. i definitely think that he fleshed out his character and all the regret and bottled up anger that shadow has been keeping inside for over 50 years. from the moment shadow was teased in the 2nd movie, i knew that peak was about to be bestowed upon us.
i'm so glad that sega has been listening to their fans in recent years, with the 1st movie mishaps and the criticisms from sonic frontiers when the controls were completely horrible. the sonic movies have gone from being absolutely hated to being the most anticipated video game adaptation probably ever.
the amount of references in this movie is actually phenomenal. i think i could talk all day about how much i love sonic adventure 2 and how it's so integral that they reference it in this movie, but i'll let the source material speak for itself. from sonic jumping from the plane, to the iconic poses from sonic and shadow, i was genuinely on the edge of my seat the whole time. i also love that they included the akira slide. whenever a motorbike is present, the akira slide must happen.
i thought that the changes to the story and lore would annoy me, but it actually makes sense. considering that the main demographic for this movie is children, introducing doom and doom eye would probably make it so incredibly convoluted and also make the run-time over 2 hours long. i appreciate that they took him out, the story works perfectly without his inclusion. it confuses me slightly that they removed maria's illnesses and the fact that shadow's testing and confinement took place on the ark in space, but honestly it's such a minute detail that it didn't bother me as much as i thought it would.
the whole 3rd act of the movie i was just extremely excited to see the ending cutscenes of sonic adventure 2 play out. they truly did not disappoint, and i'll always happily hear crush 40 when given the chance. live and learn truly is a timeless classic for sonic fans and non fans alike. also another note, i LOVE the fact that they finally gave robotnik his goofy red jacket with the big collar and gold nipples. I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THAT!!!
in conclusion, i love this fucking movie. it was everything i wanted it to be and i'm so happy with how it ended up. also i'm so glad that they're setting up another movie, possibly sonic cd? i NEED sonic cd to happen i will watch that movie a million times if/when it happens.
