INTRO!
Most folks get into music naturally, they hear something they like on the radio and expand from that.
When I was younger I remember having heard lots of metal before I landed on necrobutcher and expanded my tastes to sextrash, sarcofago, impurity and so on. Finding something I really enjoyed like necrobutcher gave me the drive to look for other similar bands and genres which resulted in my mainly Brazilian and noisegrind metal collection.
HOW DO YOU “WANT” TO BE INTO SOMETHING?
It's easy to see why "wanting" to get into a genre with no drive will fail or make you just a dedicated poser. If you actually want to be into a genre you'd already be a fan. It takes years to build up a good collection of bands that are really your style and starting off with a blank slate it's next to impossible to get anywhere. The only way to genuinely get into a music genre is to come across something that you really enjoy and go off of that. Having a drive to get into a genre that isn’t band-related like the style or community associated with it you’ll only end up Pavlov’s dogging yourself into being a fan. Listening to a genre just so you can call yourself a fan is pointless, and yet another form of poserness. I could rant for hours on how important it is to spend these years of your life obsessing over something you actually enjoy. The point is “wanting” to get into a genre isn’t a thing, you’re either into it or you’re not.
INTO IT BUT NOT SURE WHERE TO GO?
Now this I get. I always get some amount of hate for saying it but if you’re into a genre as oversaturated as black metal, you should get into something that isn’t popular. I get that a lot of famous black metal bands are popular because they are good, and I’m not saying they’re bad or nothing but because of their popularity they are generic. There’s a million bands out there that sound exactly like Mayhem and Nargaroth or any other famous bands in the genre, but there’s also a fuck ton of lesser known bands that are unique and test the boundaries of black metal. If there’s a specific subgenre you like find more bands within the style. A consistent scene you like? Get more into bands from that country/state.
Most importantly don’t force yourself to be a fan of something you ain’t. Don't rely on recommendations, get into it on your own time and within your own style.

i think i get wat ur saying, and for the most part i agree. im not sure why ppl are hellbent on liking something they.. dont.. like? when its easier to just do wat u do and enjoy wat u enjoy. i will say, there /is/ more than one way to skin a cat. i didn't get into j-rock and goth music 'organically' or whatever, i actively sought them out. i do feel like its possible to want to like something, 'cause i was that way at one point. ofc, i didn't force myself and eventually found wat worked for me, but things like this can start from seeing the style its associated with or hearing ppl rave abt it all the time, not necessarily just hearing it on the radio or from ur sisters speaker. no one should force themselves, but they shouldn't feel the need to not indulge at all just cause they didn't come across it 'naturally' or whatever. i personally listen to goth music so i can call myself goth, and that's just how that is. i like the music ofc, but my intentions were to do things 'by the book' so to speak. i honestly didn't like wat i was hearing at first but i found wat did it for me, and that cuz i actually /wanted/ to get into goth music
but n e who, im done :)) toodles !!(✿◕‿◕✿)
