warning, most of this is just me complaining about the fact that my hopes were up too much. all of these were copy and pasted from my notes
Okay, I only read the manga up to the end of the board game arc, so this is the review for that, I have not picked up the anime and most likely won't. I found out about Dandadan through people hyping up the fact that it was getting an anime adaptation. So many people were advertising it on TikTok, but specifically the romance portion. I, a sucker for nerdy guys and Gyaru baddies, immediately went to check out the details of this anime, to find out it had one episode. One episode is was absurd for the amount of hype it had, so I went to go read the manga. I LOVED the dynamic those two started out with, but midway I was flash banged with sexual assault scenes and weird sexualization of both of these teenage characters. Of course, there were around two panels with the regular fan service, and as a veteran watcher of anime, I choose to just brush those off. Why on Earth was this girl stripped down to her underwear, and touched and prodded by aliens. Additionally, why was the guy being touched and chased by an elderly ghost. Horrible start, but I have never been at such a low point in entertainment this in the days I spent reading up to the latest chapter for this manga. The amount of weird genital jokes in this is making me wonder if this author had a fetish for testicles, which they probably did, but besides that, this manga is downright crazy. NOBODY warned me about the comedy and topics this manga had. While I was reading it, I continued to say, "I'm reading it for the plot! I'm reading it for the romance!" In no world is the Dandadan plot that good for me to subject myself into what I read. However, the romance was very nice and I did like it, but NOT worth it… The story was pretty lame, mostly being developed further by the main male character's missing testicles. It would've been so much better if they just focused on how interesting it is for ghosts and aliens to coexist, instead they made it a weird sex thing for about 70% of what I read. I will admit it got better as I read on, but why did I have to read so much just for it to get slightly better and all the female characters still sexualized and put in weird positions. I enjoyed it more when the board game arc started and when it ended, but that's way too far into the story to be absolute dookie. I'm genuinely just complaining here because this manga was such a huge disappointment and didn't and still doesn't deserve all the hype it's getting. I hope if I ever bring myself back to read the newest chapters of Dandadan, that it would have actually improved.
Weird and confusing?! Finished it today, the 26th of December, and safe to say I am hugely disappointed, which is a common occurrence when it comes to reading for some reason. I thought it was cute, the male lead and female lead were super adorable together until that became what the entire story was about. I really preferred to see how the plot progressed rather than their relationship, especially because she essentially had a child, but it was all about the male lead… The whole family stuff is super weird… They're all halfway related and nobody bats an eye, but I suppose that’s accurate for the "historical" fantasy part of this manhwa. I did enjoy the fact she actually did achieve what she said she was going to do, and even made many plans herself. She was not a usual damsel in distress, but was actually utilized by the author. I feel as though I would've preferred reading the novel to the manhwa. Childcare is something I wanted more of, the female lead and her nephew did not interact as much as I wanted them to. I also didn't like how in the end her apologies for her past actions were completely brushed off and how rushed the flashback to the past was, it read off so horribly because it was essentially that situation when someone says, "It's okay," to an, "You're forgiven," situation. Overall, 4.3/10, now I want to go read some found family, childcare manhwa.
