here's my opinion on some metal subgenres:
metalcore:
meatalcore is probably my favourite subgenre, it's pretty popular and the music is more listenable than other depending on your taste. i dont really get why most elitists dont consider it metal but i dont really care either xD. the song structure is pretty much the same most of the time (verse-chorus-verse-chorus-breakdown-chorus) and while i love breakdowns, i cant deny that some bands are very very generic. also, most modern bands are defined as metalcore when they're not, like sleep token for example (i love sleep token but i feel like they're more prog metal)
here are some of my favourite metalcore bands:
LANDMVRKS my beloved
bring me the horizon (the song in the background is LosT by them btw!!)
nu metal:
i'm a bit mixed on this subgenre tbh. on one hand, i love the most popular bands but on the other hand, i feel like it's not really connected to the rest of the metal scene, i feel like it's just its own thing. also i feel like most less known bands are generic but that's coming from a metalcore glazer so yeah.
here are some of my favourite nu metal bands (very generic!!):
linkin park (yeah i know only the first two are nu metal but they're cool :3)
korn (my mother forced me to listen to their 5 first albums xD)
progressive metal:
saying "smart people music" would be enough to summarize this genre lmao. seriously tho, i like this subgenre because you can either listen to it and be fully focused on the music or listen to it as background music and you'll still have an headache in the end!!!
here are some of my favourite prog metal bands (very generic too!!):
dream theater (my father loves them and so do i)
sleep token (i dont know where to put them but i think they're some kind of prog and i wanted to include them :3)

Dude, if you love metalcore, you'll love Bullet For My Valentine. Their first 3 albums rule and have their own unique sounds to them.

My best friend is currently OBSESSED with sleep token so ive been forced to listen to some songs thanks to her lol
YAY!! i can't count the amount of times my father explained the concept of time signatures and how they change in dream théâtre songs and shit (i didn't understand shit most of the time as it was when i was like 9) I ABSOLUTELY LOVE DREAM THEATER
also for the sleep token part i have two things to say: good and worship.
