The Wizard Forum | Deaf or Death? [Part 1]

I'm getting into wizardy and magic, and I'm learning how to summon stuff now. Two days ago, I tried to summon a long forgotten god from some ancient mythology, and I aided it with some of my mana, and as a gift, the god gave me a legendary staff. So, naturally, I wanted to test my new staff to summon something more powerful. I think I got too cocky, though, and I decided to summon death.

I didn't need any favors, I think I just wanted to see death itself. Say hi, give it a blessing, maybe extend my lifetime by a month or two as a reward. So, I researched in my books, and I asked around my wizardry forum, and I found out how to do it. I knew that it most likely wouldn't work, since death is usually busy, but sometimes it allows itself to appear.

So, yesterday, I began the summoning ritual. Quite simple, actually, although the materials would be hard to gather for anyone who isn't at least a mage, but you have to be extremely precise in the ritual, or else it won't work. Most other summoning rituals have a step that acts as a statement to allow non-perfect rituals to be completed correctly, but death didn't add this to its, most likely because of how busy it is.

Once I had everything set up, I began the chant and initiated the summoning. It seemed to be going well, and I saw signs of mana usage, which usually means that the spell is working correctly. So, I focused very hard for the rest of it, and it seemed as if I had summoned death, everything looked as if it had been summoned, but it wasn't here. I checked behind some of my doors, but it wasn't there either.

But, then I noticed something peculiar. I didn't hear the music playing through my speaker, that was used for the ritual. I saw the music was playing on the screen, but I couldn't hear it. Then, shifting through the floor stood a deity. I spoke respectfully, although this wasn't death, considering how colorful this deity was.

I didn't hear the deity, but I felt its voice inside of my thoughts, breathily communicating its message.

"It is I, Deaf! The deity of hearing-loss, deafness, and anacusis!", it spoke.

However, because of the breathy sound of its voice, I heard the 'deaf' as 'death'. So, of course, I asked what I had been thinking since it had appeared.

"But, I see that you aren't black and white, no? And, you lack the robes, the skull, the hood or the sythe that death has. You are full of color, and are wearing plated brass armor. Who are you?", I shouted, hoping it would hear, because I couldn't.

"What is it that you have said? I am deaf, and deaf! Speak through your thoughts, please.", it thought to me.

Although the voice in my mind was still breathy, I could finally hear that it was an 'f', not a 'th'. I realized I had most likely made a mistake with the chanting of my ritual, and had summoned deaf instead of the prestigious death.

"Oh! That makes more sense. I had meant to summon death, not you! May you remove my hearing loss and allow me to apologize for my mistake?", I thought to Deaf.

"Ah, many do make that mistake. When I leave from your residence, my effects go with me, in around an hour or so.", it replied.

And, with that, it phased through the floor, waving goodbye, and I heard, slightly, the music that was playing, although not very much. I cleaned up my mess, but I'm extremely thankful that Deaf wasn't a malevolent deity, or else I might have had a darker fate.

The deafness has disappeared now, and I think I'll try to summon a less powerful god, maybe a half forgotten Norse god? I'll have to see.
