So A LOT of alternative music and fashion styles get mixed up, or like people get confused on which one is which. Some people think emo is the same as goth and goth is the same as punk, and you even might be think they're the same, but they really aren't! In this blog I'm gonna try my best to make the person reading this understand the difference between all
those alt styles, or like the basic ones because there are many alt styles.
So as you know- or don't know- probably all alt styles are music based, this means that alts styles aren't really on fashion they are manly based on music! And if you dress an alt style without listening to the music you might be called a poser...
Let's start with the first alternative style and the most known one, emo.
EMO: [1980s-now]
So you may have heard of this style ALOT because many people talk about it, usually making fun of it, actually (as an emo it happens a lot at school) because they don't really know what it truly is, people think it's just wearing black clothes and side bangs, well technically that's a part of it but not emo fully. Emo comes from the word emotional, as I said before, almost all alt styles are music based. So that includes emo, emo is a music based style that has emotional and confessional lyrics. But just because the lyrics are emotional doesn't mean all the songs are sad and depressing some can also have a sort of upbeat style, that's called emo pop but then there's the one that has more rage and strong, emotional lyrics and music and usually have more screams and loud sounds, this is called screamo, we can tell by the name that is emo music with screaming.
MUSIC:
The most popular types of emo music are emo pop and screamo. Emo pop is the upbeat type of emo which is the popular type which consists of:
- Panic! At The Disco
- Fall Out Boy
- Paramore
- All Time Low
- My Chemical romance (yes somehow it's emo pop)
- The Academy Is...
- Jimmy Eat World
- The All American Rejects
- Yellowcard
And then there's screamo, which is the emo music that has more screaming and harder music, some screamo bands are:
- Pierce The Veil
- Sleeping With Sirens
- Black Veil Brides
- Escape The Fate
- Falling In Reverse
- Alesana
- Asking Alexandria
- Bring Me The Horizon
- Hawthrone Heights

Here's an emo playlist I made with both emo pop and screamo :3
FASHION:
Now, let's talk about the fashion. The first thing people think of in emo fashion are black skinny jeans. And they're not wrong! Skinny jeans are a pretty important part of emo fashion especially the black ones and then the emo bands tees and some random vans or converse. Well yeah they're actually not wrong but there's some things they missed. The studded belts, eyeliner (you gotta maintain your inner Pete Wentz), gloves (mostly likely the fingerless gloves) and studded bracelets with skulls and stuff.
Here's an example!
But there's also other ways to style emo clothes. Like with skirts and shorts too
Another example^^
And then we got the hair, with is usually straight and dark (pretty hard to maintain as a curly haired emo :<) and then there could be silly little highlights in the hair. Some people wear wigs because they can't keep straightening their hair ever day, so they style them into looking more emo.
And then there's piercings and stuff but they aren't really that important as the others because you can't pierce until you're 16/18 and some school don't really allow it and families too so it's not as important as the others.
SCENE: [2000s-now]
The style that really gets mixed up with emo, scene. Scene is like the more joyful emo, it's nickname is even called neon emo as it's music and fashion is more upbeat and not as edgy than emo.
MUSIC:
Some music in emo can be categorized as scene too, so they're considered as scenemo which is included in both scene and emo subcultures. Some of those bands are:
- Cobra Starship
- Cute Is What We Aim For
- Mayday Parade
- Attack Attack!
- Dot Dot Curve
- Brokencyde
- OHEMGEE
- Millionaires
- 3OH!3
- I Set My Friends On Fire
Scene playlist (only crunkcore)
