First of all, Wicked was hands down the best movie I have seen this year. The costuming, set design, and soundtrack were all INCREDIBLE.
Secondly, I can't be the only lesbian who noticed just how queer the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba was. I watched Wicked live on Broadway two years ago and was unable to catch the queerness in their relationship because I was sitting far away from the stage and thus could not see the facial expressions and body language of the actresses playing Glinda and Elphaba. However, because I was able to make out the facial expressions and body language in the movie, I noticed immediately that they just seemed so GAY for each other. There were some moments in the movie where I thought they were going to kiss because of how close they got to each other. Their relationship just felt so much deeper than the relationships either of them had with Fiyero, although I am inclined to believe that both characters did love Fiyero and are thus bisexual.
Furthermore, it wasn't lost on me that the actress that played Elphaba in the movie is Black. I think it was smart to cast a Black actress to play Elphaba, who is a character who is picked on for her skin color, because doing so only furthered the film's message about racism and the ways in which it affects the self-esteem of BIPOC.
Lastly, I was a little surprised by how much Elphaba resembled Wednesday from the newest Wednesday show and how much Glinda resembled Regina George. The scene in which Elphaba began dancing in a "weird" way after she was made fun of at the Ozdust Ball reminded me so much of the scene in Wednesday in which Wednesday does an interpretive dance that is seen as weird by her peers. In addition to this, as I mentioned earlier, at the beginning of the movie I feel like Regina George and Glinda would have gotten along quite well (or maybe not, as it is possible that the two of them would constantly fight each other for the chance to be seen as popular). The two characters are just so similar!
P.S.
I really appreciated Wicked's commentary on governments and the ways in which they will spread propaganda against a stigmatized other in order to keep those they rule over fighting amongst each other instead of against those who rule over them. I feel like this commentary is especially needed now that Donald Trump is going to be president.
