Is it really bad to be 'basic'?
I've often found myself wondering why we're so quick to reject the idea of being like others, yet we can’t help but follow the crowd whenever a new trend emerges. Now, before I continue, let me clarify—I’m not saying that following trends is bad, or that no one should ever do it! What I want to explore is why being labeled as 'basic' is so feared, and why it’s often misunderstood.
I believe people are drawn to the idea of being 'exotic'—to the feeling of being unique or different—but they don’t always want to face the reality behind it. We reject the label of 'basic' because it feels like we're just conforming, and no one wants to feel unoriginal. We crave authenticity, so we tend to shy away from anything that might make us appear mainstream. This is why people often push against the idea of being basic: it’s not that they dislike the trends, but they want to believe they’re more interesting or unique than that. Plus, there’s this ongoing cycle where people run from what’s considered 'basic' to embrace something that feels more 'outside the box'—think of the shift from mainstream styles to the 'emo' look, for example.
This brings us to a psychological concept known as cognitive dissonance—when we hold two conflicting beliefs at the same time. On one hand, we think of being 'basic' as unoriginal, yet we continue to follow trends that are labeled as such. To ease this internal conflict, we justify our actions by telling ourselves things like, 'I like this trend because it’s actually good' or 'I’m doing it in my own way, so it’s different.' This is how we try to rationalize our behavior when it doesn’t align with how we want to see ourselves."
Conclusion:
If I had to guess, FOMO definitely has a HUGE role to play in this. (Let me know what you guys think down below.) Just do what is morally right and what suits you, people!
