So I didn't get a chance to write an update about the weekend or what happened on Monday.
So to fill in I recently found a new job at a ski/snowboarding resort. It's a lot of fun, to be honest, and I like the people I work with, my boss is making a 'Shot-ski' for a coworker's birthday, and we're all taking those shots off that ski. It's weird because I have very very and I mean VERY limited snowboarding experience. And the ski/snowboarding culture up there is really new and pretty cool to me!
Anyways on Sunday, I was running late but my little manual chevy spark made it up the mountain fine. So on Monday, I left earlier but was like I will have no issues getting up the mountain again. I was wrong. So so wrong.
I get about a mile and a half from the resort and I just know that my car isn't making it, I am between first and second and sliding out/struggling to keep traction. There was snow overnight and even though it's not a lot it was the really wet/slushy kind of snow. In the middle of an uphill area, I do a 3 point turn and proceed down the mountain on the way down I see a plow finally going up. Absolutely no cell service and it takes me 35min to get to service. I call my boss hoping the shuttle in town would be still running. Nope.
So, on the call she's like it's okay you just can't make it up, it's a learning experience I know you're new to being in mountains like this. And my reaction was like...Okay gimme some time, I am gonna problem solve. I saw a plow going up, I am going to see if I can hitch a ride up or attempt again now that I saw a plow go through.
Of course, I go asking around at the gas station and a guy is like hey in the future download this application to your phone it shows where the plows are at and has a live feed to see the roads before you head up.
But I couldn't find a ride.
So I message my boss saying I looked around for a ride, couldn't find one and that I am going to attempt to go up again. Call my sister and she is LIVID that I am looking to hitch a ride saying how dangerous it is. And here is the thing. The ride up is a straight shot there are no side roads and it dumps out at the resort. There is no way anyone can take a side route into an unknown area on the way. Yes, there is a risk. But it's less risky than me taking my car and potentially getting into an accident.
I get to a certain point and the roads still look bad and everyone is pulled over putting chains on their tires and I start asking around and explaining I am already late my manager knows what's going on I work at the resort they are going to and if they had an extra seat I can ride up in. I was in my uniform so I made sure to point to all the staff and uniform so that they knew I wasn't just some weirdo and explained that I could have a coworker give me a ride back here to my car, and pointed to the car that I in fact do have.
I did end up finding a ride, with a lovely family who was road-tripping from California with two ADORABLE kids. And this little girl runs to the back of the RV as I am petting their dog Lola, and she brings me a book to show me it's her favorite. This little girl asked me what something said.
I don't make the rules if a little kid brings you a book you read it to them.
So I read here the book on the short drive up and it made my morning. I saw her mom at the end of my shift again, and she said that I made her daughter's day. And I told her no, she made mine, and that I have told everyone how I got to read 'The world needs more Purple People' book to her daughter. I miss my niece and nephew so much and they're really far away. And I thanked her again and again for being kind enough to give me the ride up to the resort for work!
My sister was still mad that I took such a risk. And yes it was. But I took what I thought would keep myself and others on the road safest. I also really believe that most people are kind and want to help others. Yes, there are people who are not. But I do believe that most people want to help others when they can.
