Today, I listened to “The Glow Pt. 2” by The Microphones.
The Glow P.t 2 is the second album in a trilogy of albums by the indie rock/folk band “The Microphones” spearheaded by multi-instrumentalist Phil Elverum The first one being 2000’s “it was hot, we stayed in the water” and the third one being 2003’s “Mount Eerie. The three albums detail a fictional story about Phil Elverum going through a nasty break up, which causes him to go to the woods and die, and proceed to explore the afterlife with the glow part two being about Phil's time in the woods. This album has a wide range of sounds from soft and comforting Indie folk that makes you feel like you’re driving through a mountain area at night with the stars out to heavy, almost metal-esque post rock that makes you feel like you’re going through the depths of hell. The album features a lot of Lofi production, that gives it a very DIY feel combining that with the wide array of instruments, including jangly acoustic guitars, thumping drums, fuzz bass, and piano it gives the album a very Fever dream feel. The lyrics and writing are also just as ranged it could go from detailed stories of Phil time with his ex-girlfriend and we fall out of that relationship in tracks such as “The Headless Horseman” and “The Moon” to Phil confronting this broken relationship and trying to move on from it with the use of metaphor in tracks, such as the title track and “Samurai Sword”. In conclusion, this album is a incredible piece of Indie rock and one of the best albums of the 2000s
Score: 9/10
Favorite tracks: I Want Wind To Blow, the moon, the Headless Horseman, my Roots Are Strong and Deep, the gleam part two, Map, you’ll be in the air, I am bored, I Felt Your Shape, and Samurai Sword
