If you are on this website i'm more than sure that you've notcied it. With websites like spacehey, sheezy.art & neocities or games like Webfishing & Ponytown the internet, or at least a portion of it, is breaking away from the hyper-capitalised hellscape that advertiser's salivate over.
I think that this site especially is a sign of that. The original myspace died due to its person-first model of content which was very difficult to add advertisments to, as an entire person cannot be nearly as specific as a video you can stick adverts into before, between and after. This site instead is existing off of donations and merchendise sales that has kept it going for four years so far.
And then there are games like Webfishing and Ponytown that are heavily reminisant of old mmos (club penguin comes to mind especially). I think that there is most definately an aspect of nostalgia to is. I spent a few years when I was a kid playing club penguin however I never was in the right place or time for myspace or old school deviant art; so there must be something more to it, right?
Again if you are my age or adjacent to it you have probably grown up with the content-first model of the internet, where the creation is far more "important" than the person behind it. You see this alot with modern youtube channels that create one thing and die as they try to branch away. This form of the internet is made to be consumed not to help connect (like the internet really should be) as that's what makes the most money for advertisers. Though, this has the effect of making the internet incredibly lonely. If you want to meet new people you have to hope and pray you have a decent enough skill you can monopolise in order to get people you might want to talk to to see it. This lonelyness can then further evolve into feelings of inadiquacy as you struggle to understand why your post didn't get enough likes, why not enough people are seeing it, why you are so god damn alone.
I think people are really tired of this lonelyness and i think the moderate success of this site and others are proof enough.
As nothing does, I'm sure this site will not last forever; But while it is i'm going to enjoy meeting new people and making new friends through it :3
