hair bleach smells NOSE ROTTING TEAR INDUCINGLY BAD

first time bleaching my hair just a few days ago with the help of my emo ass brother, and he was complaining how it smelled SO BAD which, I COULDNT SMELL IT AT ALL?? I mean I can't taste anything but that's a whole other issue. BUT he gave me the bowl with bleach mixture in it to hold while he applied it onto my hair and HOLY SHIT I GOT A WHIFF OF IT AND  IT SMELLED SO FUCKING BAD LIKE HAD MY NOSE TURNED UPWARD AND FACE SCRUNCHED UP BAD. I was gagging. I DIDN'T KNOW IT SMELLED THAT BAD??? I've never bleached my hair or like anything before so it was a new and disgusting experience. But I was genuinely tweaking when I had to wash it out cus I thought it was gonna get in my eyes so I was like screaming at him LMFAOOO. but dear GOD did that smell horrendous.  EUGHHHHH...
