(12/14/2015) Why do people make the same mistakes, over and over again? In this retrospective piece the holiday season of 2015, the repetitive cycle of self-destruction and addiction—particularly the comfort found in misery. Drawing on real-life observations, I reflected on the struggles of someone I know or knew who continues to battle their choices, particularly alcohol, despite the harm it causes to themselves and those around them. How do thoughts shape our reality? Why do we often fail to break free from these cycles even when the path forward seems clear? This isn’t about judgment; it’s about the punishment of emotional weight of watching someone we care about spiral, despite opportunities to change.
