⋆˖⁺‧₊☽00s teen magazines☾₊‧⁺˖⋆

let's talk about Y2K mags and how they were literally EVERYTHING back in the day. there's truly nothing that compares to the affect magazines had on the world; to teens in the early 2000s, those mags were like the bible. i honestly wish we could bring teen gossip magazines back into popularity and start taking fashion and beauty advice from publications of  Seventeen, Teen Vogue, Cosmo Girl, J-14, and even Bliss. tbh i think half the reason for the downfall of celebrity culture, and the disappearance of the kind of icons around in the 2000s, as well as the start of microtrends and fast fashion consumerism is partly attributed to us no longer being influenced by magazines, and instead using social media. un-curated posts, on an app where anyone can be an influencer is a dangerous game when it comes to what's trending, and for how long things manage to stay relevant.

before a time where TikTok and Insta brought about new trends each month, everyone was wearing whatever the celebs were caught in. thanks to Hollywood socialites, music icons, and movie and tv stars, juicy track suits, low rise jeans, mini skirts, with big sun glasses and baby tees flooded the fashion industry. aside from just clothing, all brands relied on the famous to be papped with their products to make sales, even the success of the blackberry flip phone can be attributed to what was being shown in magazines. people wore what they saw in the magazines.

on top of just clothing, y2k magazines had a huge influence on beauty; makeup tips and hair tutorials were being pushed with new trends. titles like "how to get the perfect beachy waves" and "the latest must have lip gloss" were always in the "celebrity beauty secrets" section in every edition. everyone HAD to know what shade of lipstick Paris Hilton was wearing, and were all desperate to try the hacks they claimed were life changing.

on top of all that, 2000s magazines were Full of celebrity gossip. admittedly it did glamourize an image of toxicity in relationships and friendships, as well as encroaching on celebs privacy and personal matters, the 2000s Hollywood drama was full of some of the most iconic celebrity moments documented. the Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, and Lindsay Lohan discourse, Brittany vs Christina feud, celebrity breakups, affairs, fall outs, whatever it was, the magazines had the inside scoop, and kept the world up to date on the messy lives of those in the lime light. they loved to share the drama, and if you didn’t know who was hooking up with who, or who wore what to the VMAs, you were basically missing out on the culture

in short, Y2K magazines were a HUGE part of growing up in the 2000s. they shaped what was worn, how everyone did their makeup, and who the world cared about. they gave a peek into celeb life while also feeding peoples thirst for drama and gossip. if you didn’t have a mag to read on your lunch break, were you even a teen? the most iconic and staple part of the 2000s and something that should 100%  be brought back.
