Hey! Scratch of plans.I canned the video idea as the topic isn't that BIG and im too stupid. That doesnt mean im not making a video. I'll post it on BitView someday.... Stay tuned!
It's probably just me but I oddly feel super excited whenever I get to interact with older media or just old things in general, and by that I mean even just observing them its enough for me to get excited. It's a weird sense of nostaliga for something that I personally never experienced and will never use but it's still cool to just.. own stuff like that. It's like you own a part of that mediums history.
But what turns me very depresed is when that old thing being outright inaccesible or lost media. What's worse is when there's only one of it's kind and can forever evolving. Lost media at least have a small chance of being found but the web is a very complex and evolving thing. You can't just revert to how it used to be. Stuff changes and you're only left with bitterness and happy memories to haunt you for the rest of you're life. But it appears I was not the only one that wanted such a thing. Therefore "retro" social medias were born. In an ironic fashion some died and relatively quickly at that.By retro I mean in style not actually being old. Here I wan't to showcase some DEAD examples and why I find it so fascinating.
1. MySpace 93
This is genuinely depressive to visit now, 3 years after it was so shamelessly murdered. I'm not sure if it was the first of its kind to do it in the modern era or at least close to today as there's FriendProject which is esentially MySpace but very religious and made around 2008. MySpace93 was essentially the 3rd pillar of the "MySpace clone niche". The earliest date I can get on it is 27 of October 2019 which predates Spacehey with over a year.
Looking at it now it feel a lot more empty. Every profile you stumble on has been dorment since 2021. It's more sad when you realise all of these people are now 3 or 4 years older then when they were when they made the account. It feels like I'm reading someone's diary that they wrote in when they were 14.
One weird thing that MySpace93 did better then Spacehey is the fact that you can put gifs as you're profile picture. Like they have no reason as to why not to add this. If Vidlii and MySpace93 can then why can't you Spacehey (smh).
If you're wondering why is MySpace93 down it was essentially because of a hacker incident. I imagen it there being a lot of gore posting in between.
2. Wevidi
To be completely honest with you. I had no history with this before I found out about it like some months ago. It's part of a more popular niche: "Youtube clones" which is just old youtube. From what I could find this was made in early 2021 or even a little older. There's no wiki for this stuff so it's just guess work.
If MySpace93 was depressing then this is just sad but you can't blame it since it never took off to being with. It's most viewed video seems to be the second video uploaded on here and anything after that was just going downhill.
I personally like being part of small communities. That's why I enjoy interacting with these types of sites and you probably do too... but when it's small too small? If you explore hard enough you'll find some genuine gems here and relics that represent a small civilisation once lived a thrived here. It's just a shame no ones there to watch it. I remember one day when I was checking out this site, I was literally the only one on it that day. I would just watch a video and the "Videos Being Watched Now" tab and that video was there along with 2 others that I've watched. Yes it's that bad.
The most recent videos get like under 10 views IF LUCKY. I'd say you should check out if you feel like you wan't to visit a ghost town or just burnt out on modern youtube.
Honourable Mentions
Here are some honourable mentions but couldn't add because they still somehow had a pulse:
- Friend Project is still somewhat active even at first glace it may not seem so, you should check it out. Not like other then Spacehey you have any other options left.
- Tubelious is anther youtube clone (duh) but somehow averages like 20ish views per new upload so there DOES exist a community even if it's comparable to a small village in Kenya.
- CyanTube this literally shut down like on the day that I first found out about it. I already had the idea of this blog in mind and considering it's obscurity you know... but you can no longer visit it. It's been taken down FOREVER.
Closing Remarks
To be frank I have no real clue how to end this. Throughout all this I kinda realised that nothing lasts forever and before you realise it, it's already gone. I've had so many things go by me without me realsing before it was too late, way too many for me to care to remember. But the least I can give you is a tip as to not make this mistake at least on the internet. Download anything that you like and theoretically might wanna watch it again, don't just assume it's gonna stay there forever or that someone else is gonna archive it. Unless you have it in a HDD or an SDD somewhere it may be at risk of being lost forever.
Bye.

i TOTALLY get what u mean about "old" social medias, i LOVE any type of old technology, i keep some myself!!!! hoping we get more retro webs in the future!

This is quite an interesting topic IMO. Empty medias & spaces are not only around retro social medias (I'm not sure if they're are just social medias revivals), but with every revival apparently.
You can see this happening with CyberTown Revival (Basically a VRML metaverse world) and along a few more I forgot about. It just happens to be a loop cycle no matter what, if it is a revival or not. The end day will arrive for everything, including medias, slowly being forgotten, dead, and empty.
tbh i rlly like to check out a place the onced thrived with thousands of ppl now its a ghost town
its intresting in a way

Wow this is honestly very interesting to hear, since im now starting to dive into the trend of old social media sites but i never knew there was a duplicate version of MySpace, i thought there was just only one, but im glad theres more myspace like websites out there.
DJSng!
This is a really cool write-up and you brought attention to a lot of very niche things I never even knew about, thank you for making this!
I also read the comments and it's interesting we also have a Myspace93 revival, looks like I'll be checking it out later!
I completely forgot about Friend Project. Apparently I tried it at some point when I was below the age of consciousness (somehow) and I couldn't find myself enjoying it. I don't like the UI at all, it feels pretty bad to navigate, but the mention was a really nice flashback!

myspace93 didnt have gore raids, passwords and emails were leaked bc passwords werent hashed and there was no way to change emails or passwords linked to accounts AT ALL, ANYWHERE on the website :/ i actually found an acc abt it a while back, @myspace_refugee_list here on spacehey
Ooooooooh
I was just assuming
Thx for the tip

oh my god my myspace93... my heart sank when you mentioned that the users might be 3 or 4 years older now than they were bc i am thinking about my fwiends now which some i have gotten in contact with as soon as i migrated here when the site shut down and most of them that i havent heard of since then
theres a myspace refugee list on here that might have some of your old friends on it, @myspace_refugee_list i think

Yes, this makes me so sad, a while ago I went after a childhood game that I played when I was a kid (gaturro world) it wasn't very popular at the time but I loved it
I found out that the site was deactivated years ago and it made me extremely depressed ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ
with stuff like that it really depends
think like club penguin there are some privet servers for it that lets u play it
idk mabey there could be some for urs

have you tried the wayback machine? (not fully sure how it works, so if it can't bring up deleted/deactivated sights mb)
by XxSPARX_x_GUTZxX; ; Report
The way back machine don't work like that
For sites that let unplay Lil games need servers to run and the servers for that shut down I think

this reminds of like, the death of social media networks in general and how there's just soooo many popping up, but, like,, they just end up all being the same, really

Yea thats what i meant
It happend to me but with some gen honest to god youtube vid but later got taken down

I'm ID 118 on myspace93 and it's kinda crazy looking back, especially at my new years post that predates covid and the lockdown, it's weird looking back at the enthusiasm for the new decade considering what ended up happening in the coming months. Here we are now and it's almost been 5 years since that post was made. I do kinda miss 93 even though spacehey is cool, I felt a sense of community more on 93, whether it had to do with a smaller userbase or a shift in the general behavior of everyone I can't really say. I mean for one everyone added each other and there was this sense of cultural mish mash, but on here everyone seems to have their own communities which causes a divide I feel. Def some good memories on 93, I even met a guy who lived in my area and we were gonna meet up til covid happened.
thats the benefit of a small community
93 had like what 50k users?
while spacehey had a million or so
not to mention how fresh the idea mustve seemed

it was a really fun concept when it first released, a lot of my friends and I were in late hs/early college at the time and had faint memories of using/exploring myspace as kids but this was our true opportunity to live it out as adolescents. just the whole experience of sharing profiles, css, music, planning meetups, etc was so fun.

i do so agree!!! i felt like i knew everyone there and i was like a part of a community or something thats why it was so much fun

the music page on myspace93 kills me...it has every single profile song from all 85,000 profiles on it, all at once!!! i tried scrolling through it but man, i feel so overwhelmed cuz it feels like ur always missing out on something XD
