Hey! This is esentially the script of a video I'm making about this very topic! I made it into a blog for the people who like to read rather then listen! The video isn't finished yet tho.... I'll post it on BitView soon.... Stay tuned!
It's probably just me but I oddly feel super excited whenever I get to interact with older media or just old things in general, and by that I mean even just observing them its enough for me to get excited. It's a weird sense of nostaliga for something that I personally never experienced and will never use but it's still cool to just.. own stuff like that. It's like you own a part of that mediums history.
But what turns me very depresed is when that old thing being outright inaccesible or lost media. What's worse is when there's only one of it's kind and can forever evolving. Lost media at least have a small chance of being found but the web is a very complex and evolving thing. You can't just revert to how it used to be. Stuff changes and you're only left with bitterness and happy memories to haunt you for the rest of you're life. But it appears I was not the only one that wanted such a thing. Therefore "retro" social medias were born. In an ironic fashion some died and relatively quickly at that.By retro I mean in style not actually being old. Here I wan't to showcase some DEAD examples and why I find it so fascinating.
1. MySpace 93
This is genuinely depressive to visit now, 3 years after it was so shamelessly murdered. I'm not sure if it was the first of its kind to do it in the modern era or at least close to today as there's FriendProject which is esentially MySpace but very religious and made around 2008. MySpace93 was essentially the 3rd pillar of the "MySpace clone niche". The earliest date I can get on it is 27 of October 2019 which predates Spacehey with over a year.
Looking at it now it feel a lot more empty. Every profile you stumble on has been dorment since 2021. It's more sad when you realise all of these people are now 3 or 4 years older then when they were when they made the account. It feels like I'm reading someone's diary that they wrote in when they were 14.
One weird thing that MySpace93 did better then Spacehey is the fact that you can put gifs as you're profile picture. Like they have no reason as to why not to add this. If Vidlii and MySpace93 can then why can't you Spacehey (smh).
If you're wondering why is MySpace93 down it was essentially because of a hacker incident. I imagen it there being a lot of gore posting in between.
2. Wevidi
To be completely honest with you. I had no history with this before I found out about it like some months ago. It's part of a more popular niche: "Youtube clones" which is just old youtube. From what I could find this was made in early 2021 or even a little older. There's no wiki for this stuff so it's just guess work.
If MySpace93 was depressing then this is just sad but you can't blame it since it never took off to being with. It's most viewed video seems to be the second video uploaded on here and anything after that was just going downhill.
I personally like being part of small communities. That's why I enjoy interacting with these types of sites and you probably do too... but when it's small too small? If you explore hard enough you'll find some genuine gems here and relics that represent a small civilisation once lived a thrived here. It's just a shame no ones there to watch it. I remember one day when I was checking out this site, I was literally the only one on it that day. I would just watch a video and the "Videos Being Watched Now" tab and that video was there along with 2 others that I've watched. Yes it's that bad.
The most recent videos get like under 10 views IF LUCKY. I'd say you should check out if you feel like you wan't to visit a ghost town or just burnt out on modern youtube.
Honourable Mentions
Here are some honourable mentions but couldn't add because they still somehow had a pulse:
- Friend Project is still somewhat active even at first glace it may not seem so, you should check it out. Not like other then Spacehey you have any other options left.
- Tubelious is anther youtube clone (duh) but somehow averages like 20ish views per new upload so there DOES exist a community even if it's comparable to a small village in Kenya.
- CyanTube this literally shut down like on the day that I first found out about it. I already had the idea of this blog in mind and considering it's obscurity you know... but you can no longer visit it. It's been taken down FOREVER.
Closing Remarks
To be frank I have no real clue how to end this. Throughout all this I kinda realised that nothing lasts forever and before you realise it, it's already gone. I've had so many things go by me without me realsing before it was too late, way too many for me to care to remember. But the least I can give you is a tip as to not make this mistake at least on the internet. Download anything that you like and theoretically might wanna watch it again, don't just assume it's gonna stay there forever or that someone else is gonna archive it. Unless you have it in a HDD or an SDD somewhere it may be at risk of being lost forever.
Bye.

I'm ID 118 on myspace93 and it's kinda crazy looking back, especially at my new years post that predates covid and the lockdown, it's weird looking back at the enthusiasm for the new decade considering what ended up happening in the coming months. Here we are now and it's almost been 5 years since that post was made. I do kinda miss 93 even though spacehey is cool, I felt a sense of community more on 93, whether it had to do with a smaller userbase or a shift in the general behavior of everyone I can't really say. I mean for one everyone added each other and there was this sense of cultural mish mash, but on here everyone seems to have their own communities which causes a divide I feel. Def some good memories on 93, I even met a guy who lived in my area and we were gonna meet up til covid happened.

it was a really fun concept when it first released, a lot of my friends and I were in late hs/early college at the time and had faint memories of using/exploring myspace as kids but this was our true opportunity to live it out as adolescents. just the whole experience of sharing profiles, css, music, planning meetups, etc was so fun.
