Why Does Life Feel Like a Simulation?

Just to clarify, I’m not saying that everyone feels like an NPC or that most environments seem AI-generated. What I’m talking about is derealization and dissociation.

There are times when people might question their own reality—wondering if they’re even real. Everything about their existence, purpose, and meaning can start to feel confusing. You might even catch yourself asking, "Who am I? What am I?" This feeling of a distorted sense of self can be linked to the environment around you and how it shapes your perception of the world.

There are moments when you look in the mirror and start questioning everything around you—your surroundings, even your own features. You might zone out, feel disconnected from your body, and suddenly find yourself questioning everything. It’s as if you forget that you even exist, and the body you’re in starts to feel unreal like it’s not really yours at all.

Another example of these feelings might be found in The Truman Show. In the film, Truman slowly discovers that his entire life has been a lie, constructed purely for television. Everything he believed to be real turns out to be fabricated, and nothing around him is genuine. It’s like realizing that everything you've known, your entire existence, was just an illusion. It may cause you to grow suspicious of others, wondering if they're genuine or not,

Have any of you ever felt like this?

uh yeah but then i rediscovered the immense and grounding pain and sensation of existence and it felt like being born again and it was like okay this is by definition real, this is how we define reality, by the gestalt of our experience, by the certainty we have that we experience such things and then become aware of that fact.

That's cool, but that sense of realization can come very late for people or be easily broken by many fluctuating feelings. It's hard to grasp the concept of that for many.
