Random “Ode” I had to write a year ago for a class. My chosen topic was Opossum (of course).
“Ode to the Opossum
in their feral beauty.
For how their fur is soft to the touch.
And how cute their fangs can be.
Or how wiry their whiskers can get.
Oh bless the Opossum,
for its low body temperature.
How it can get as low as 94 degrees Fahrenheit,
to fight the rabies,
and still not be cold.
So good that you can carry 13 babies on your back,
and still keep trucking.
Without a doubt,
you are the best mothers of the year.
Congrats.
And even if you do end up as roadkill,
I still like you a lot.
Just because you’re fuzzy and cute.
But we can skip the “ugly” part,
because you are the opposite.”
