My Game Collection

schlime9k's Game & Console Collection

This blog is to show the progression of my video-game & console collection as I continue to add to it each passing day. I'll be constantly editing this blog so if you want to keep in touch with it, it'll be pinned on my profile! This list will show when, how and why I decided to get the games/consoles I got, and my thoughts on it. So, lets see my collection! My overall goal is to make a video-game library that my friends can come to with a game in mind, and I'll have it and the console to play it on, and we can all have a blast playing any game we want on the original console like old times!

All photos were taken with my Canon EOS M50 MarkII, in high quality 6000x4000 px

The Shelf

This is the dreaded shelf where I put all my games and boxes, since I'm a freak and collect the boxes for game consoles and other special stuff alongside the games. Notable mentions include the box for the Smash Ultimate edition GameCube controller I bought when I pulled out the old Wii that thankfully had GC backwards compatibility, the Japanese N64 Expansion Pak I bought while in Japan around 2018, and the Pokemon: Let's Go Eevee! Edition Switch Console box that I don't have the console to go along with since I got it while working at EB Games (GameStop in AUS). I'll be going over the games later in this blog.

The DS Collection

The DS is a handheld very near and dear to my heart as I grew up playing it so much, so it only makes sense I have 4 of them + a Gameboy Advance SP.

From left to right in the image below:

A black Gameboy Advance SP given to my by my sisters ex-partner (thank you Peter), my sisters black DS Lite, my personal Mario Red DS Lite, my Flame Red 3DS, and my modded black New 3DS. Modding your 3DS is so easy, convenient and beneficial there is no reason you shouldn't do it in my opinion. If you have a 3DS, mod it.

The Console Collection

First are the "retro" consoles, which are my N64 and modded original Wii (since there's a Wii "Family Edition" that removed GameCube backwards compatibility, thank god I don't have that one). I tend to play both consoles quite frequently just because I love all 3 consoles, especially the N64, the best console. I would love to grow my N64 and GameCube collection but both are just way too expensive for me at the moment, so maybe when the market dies down...

I've always had my Wii, don't remember a time I didn't have it, and my N64 I got when I was way down south in WA from some guy for like $200 alongside GoldenEye 007, which is neat!

Next is the modern(-ish) consoles! Top shelf is my original model Nintendo Switch, soft-modded to be able to dump cartridges onto my PC in order to emulate (r.i.p Yuzu & Ryujinx) them.

Below that is a Pokemon: Scarlet & Violet edition Switch OLED that I actually use to play the Switch games and some others on the Switch Online emulators which is a very cool feature imo, and next to that is an NES Mini and Super Famicom Mini, both modded for the ability to dump ROMs on there to play. I use both every now and then but it's mainly the NES mini because it has TetrisGYM, a ROM hack of NES Tetris to practice it on a competitive level (yes there is "competitive NES Tetris" it's cool af).

Lastly is the Hyperkin Retron 3 HD, I love it so much. It's a NES, SNES, and SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive in one console that runs off MicroUSB, incredible. I believe it's a must-have for convenience in playing older games if you can't afford/find/find the space for those three (3) consoles separately. Runs really well and is quite affordable!

Next up on my other shelf on the wall instead of my desk is my SNES I bought on Facebook Marketplace in mid-2022. It was a bundle with a few games for roughly $200 AUD. It's ok, works perfectly fine, just really yellow in some areas, and I look on Marketplace and see not-so-yellow ones for cheaper and sometimes I just kinda regret getting this one but whatever I guess. I don't have any room on the desk for it so I use it to keep my books upright lol

Also this thing is huge, my hand for reference:

Next is my Japanese N64 I got while at Japan in 2018, I forgot how much I bought it for but it wasn't very expensive because I was NOT a rich kid back then, nor am I one now. I don't have any japanese N64 games (though I am eyeing a really fun rail-shooter called "Sin & Punishment" that I've been playing on the N64 Switch Online emulator, love it so much) and so I use this as decoration in my room.

And lastly, my pride and joy console, the Valve Steam Deck 256gb LCD model, I got this while the Steam Deck wasn't available in Australia, as it only became available via Steam in Australia November this year (2024) so I had to buy it on Kogan for like $800 AUD, which is NUTS because it's like $650 AUD from Gabe himself so I'm a bit annoyed.

Regardless, the Steam Deck is an AMAZING machine! Holy shit, I can play Dark Souls III PORTABLY!!!! That ALONE is incredible, but the fact it's pushing Linux gaming, and also the handheld hardware market by being a major competitor to other hardware manufacturers is crazy. If only there were a game they could make to have this be pushed even further.... something with a 3 in the title, maybe??? Seriously thinking about upgrading to the OLED model though, with more storage, battery life and a way better screen for only $250 AUD more! Seriously please get a Steam Deck shits bussin.

The Amiibo Collection

Despite what it may seem, I'm not that big of a Nintendo fan, so much so I buy all of the amiibo I can find, I'm not THAT much of a bootlicker, I buy what I think looks cool, which pretty much sums up the choices for amiibo I own.

From left to right in the image below:

Mario 30th Anniversary Classic Colour edition, Mega-Man, Pikachu, Pac-Man, Bowser Jr., Link (Twilight Princess Super Smash Bros. version), Captain Falcon, Zero-Suit Samus, Mii Brawler, Pit (from Kid Icarus).

I do have a Pac-Man amiibo I keep in-box, since that was given to me by my cousin and I already had Pac-Man before he got it for me. I keep it CIB (Complete In Box) just so I have something to remember what the amiibo boxes looked like and to keep it extra special since I rarely get to see that cousin nowadays. It's a bit yellow now though.

The N64 Games

This is probably my most prizes possession in this whole collection. A CIB Collectors Edition Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and incredible game that is a must-have for any N64 collectors. When I saw it on Facebook Marketplace for $250 AUD, I had to message them and get it, though it was a 1.5 hour train ride to get there, it was worth it.

The box is in good condition, though the manual is unfortunately ripped, everything else is perfectly fine though, including the game! (yes I tested the save battery is fine and works but I might need to replace it soon...)

My actual favourite game is Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, I could talk about it all day and might make a blog about it but for now just the collection. I bought this at a local retro game store either early this year (2024) or late last year (2023) for $100 AUD and I kinda wish I didn't now, thought it is nice having a copy of my favourite game, I could've used that $100 to save up for a boxed version, that doesn't have etching on the back of it...

Lastly is GoldenEye 007, there's nothing much to say about this game that hasn't already been said. I got it alongside my AUS N64 and it's a great game, one of the first FPS games, and definitely one of the first on console (don't think about SNES DOOM). That's all my N64 games for now!

NES Games

It's sad to say this, but I only have one (1) real NES game, I have 4 overall but the other 3 are reproductions that I thought were real until recently when I took another look at them!

The real one is NES Tetris, again, I love this game as it's a certified classic and just really fun and addicting! You can't go wrong with NEStris (as I like to call it since there are 50,000,000,000 tetris games). I bought this earlier this year for $30 AUD at my local retro game store, easiest purchase of my life.

Now to th-

The Repros

How to spot a reproduction cartridge:

1. Where is it coming from? If there's a seller on eBay with hundreds of carts in volume, is it really an authentic cartridge?

2. Quality of the artwork, look for JPEG artifacts or lost quality due to compression, if there is any (which there shouldn't be), it's probably a fake.

3. Number of screw holes: While there are a few 5-screw NES carts out there, they're really rare since Nintendo went with the 3-screw cart in 1986 and stopped producing 5-screw games. If you spot a 5-screw cart for anything less than $100 USD, you're being punked.

3. Pricing, know what your item is worth, if it's on eBay being sold for tens of dollars with high-quality images instead of from an individual with a shit-ass iPhone, you're the one being punked.

Example: Super Mario Bros. for the NES: this one is unfortunately a reproduction. Some signs;

Discoloration in the casing itself.

5-screw cartridge.

Lastly, artifacts in the cartridge art (was like this when shipped and IS part of the art sticker)

Next is Legend of Zelda NES, which has the same issues as before, but is a 3-screw cartridge this time, so good thing the sellers updated it.

Lastly is the Mega-Man 6-in-1. I obviously knew this was a reproduction, I just bought it because I wanted the 6 Mega-Man games but didn't wanna pay all that for the 6 different cartridges at the time.

The thing is, It's fine to sell reproduction cartridges, but if you're trying to play them off as official, you're a cunt, plain and simple!

SNES Games

I have 4 official SNES games, 3 of the 4 I got bundled with my SNES for $200 AUD so that's pretty damn good, one was even CIB!

From top-left to bottom-right:

Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing, Kirby's Ghost Trap, Super Mario World, & Super Mario All-Stars.

The only one I bought standalone was Super Mario World for $65 AUD, I got punked because that shit is NOT worth $65 (it's not shit SMW is a great game just not worth that much in the modern world).

Super Mario All-Stars is in pretty bad nick, as its whole back plate is yellowed. Yellowing is perfectly normal for plastic so it's fine and won't harm the electronics inside, but it's just annoying because it's supposed to be grey and now it's not and looks moldy and eugh!

Kirby's Ghost Trap is the CIB game I got, and it's just Puyo Puyo before it was made by SEGA and called Puyo Puyo, I don't get this timeline for Puyo Puyo...

Gameboy Games

I have 4 Gameboy games, 2 of them being Pokemon... I'm not a big fan of Pokemon, really. All 4 of them were gifts alongside the GBA-SP from my sisters ex. Pokemon Red, Pokemon Gold, GB Tetris, and Tarzan for the Gameboy Colour.

Tarzan is actually a pretty fun game, gotta say, but the highlight here is obviously Tetris, because DAMN I love the game...

Lastly is my collection of games on the shelf!

Bulk Games on the Shelf

Here are my Switch games and DS/3DS games, you can see them in the images, I'm too lazy to type all of them out:

I will, however, state my 2 Mega Drive games and GameCube games.

I got Sonic the Hedgehog 2, one of the better Sonic games on the Mega Drive/Genesis (wherever you're from, I said it both ways :) ) and Dick Vitale's "Awesome Baby!" College Hoops, a pretty clunky basketball game made famous by YouTuber "ScottTheWoz". But I didn't know he existed until 2019-2020, and I bought this back in 2018! I bought it because I thought the word "dick" was funny (it still is a funny word tbh) and it was $5! What a Steal!

The GameCube games I bought at my local retro game store on Friday the 26th of July this year (2024 still), I know this because I took a photo on my phone (seen below), were Super Smash Bros. Melee and Resident Evil 0, both $45 AUD each, which is an ABSOLUTE STEAL for both games.

End of Blog (for now)

Thank you all for reading my ramblings of old video-games and consoles, if you want to stay up to date, this blog will be pinned on my profile, just come check out the updates underneath this bit every now and then and that's it! Adios!

Thank you for enjoying my blog!

Yes, I do very much plan on expanding my collection. I would like to get a boxed version of Majora's Mask if possible, and I would also like to get a Sega Mega Drive (PAL name for Sega Genesis) and more games for that console. Other than that, I'll just grab some games that grab my attention when I'm at the game store every now and then.

I'd also like to expand my collection to DVD's since I was at a store that sold some blu-rays for pretty cheap, considering the last time I saw blu-rays being sold was years ago for like $30 AUD per dvd, now they're like $15.

Thanks for enjoying my blog!

There's even more stuff I haven't shown because I completely forgot about them since I don't have any room and they're collecting dust in boxes at the moment.

Having a decently large collection like this one means I've got a lot of games to get through, I've not played a lot of these titles so I'm excited to do so.
