jdramas i love (and still think about)

my recommendations !!

school dramas

  • gokusen (iconic teacher-student chaos; odagiri ryu and yanki boys were my whole heart. each season had its charm, but season 2 really hit different.)
  • hana yori dango (classic shoujo vibes; tsukushi’s sass against f4 was legendary. the love triangle, the luxury, and the drama—it’s timeless.)
  • nobuta wo produce (so nostalgic; kusano's "nobuta power, chunyuu!" is burned into my brain. friendship goals despite all the awkwardness and bullying themes.)
  • great teacher onizuka (GTO) (wild, hilarious, and full of unexpected life lessons. onizuka’s insane methods always worked, somehow.)
  • yamada taro monogatari (the poor prince with rich looks—wholesome and chaotic. i love how yamada always tried his best to take care of his family.)
  • my boss, my hero (hilarious; gangsters pretending to be students? the pudding obsession still makes me laugh.)
  • koizora (high school love that will destroy your heart; the drama of it all was too much, but i couldn't stop watching.)

romance and drama

  • todome no kiss (love the time-loop mystery and intense vibe—so unique. it’s rare for a drama to balance romance and suspense so well.)
  • summer nude (beach town vibes, unrequited love, and healing. it’s all about slow-burn love and beautiful summer sunsets.)
  • buzzer beat (basketball, romance, yamapi, and that amazing soundtrack. the chemistry between the leads was so heartwarming.)
  • proposal daisakusen (time-traveling to fix past mistakes; such bittersweet love. the baseball scene still gets me emotional every time.)
  • long vacation (slow, mature romance—peaceful yet emotional. senpai’s piano scenes were everything. this is jdrama comfort food.)
  • love shuffle (a romantic game of “shuffling” partners—so unique and surprisingly deep.)

workplace and slice of life

  • haken no hinkaku (temp worker powerhouse; empowering and hilarious. oomae haruko is the kind of character you want to root for.)
  • asuko march! (girl in a technical high school full of guys—cute and inspiring. her determination to fit in while being herself was so refreshing.)
  • kimi wa petto (woman adopts a younger man as her “pet”—weird but oddly cute. the power dynamics are so fun to watch, and matsujun is adorable as momo.)
  • hotaru no hikari (office lady vs. her lazy “himono onna” alter-ego—so relatable. her love for drinking beer while lounging at home is a mood.)
  • nodame cantabile (quirky girl and uptight guy find love through classical music—wholesome, funny, and inspiring.)

thriller, mystery, and action

  • liar game (psychological mind games that keep you on edge—so gripping. watching naoto navigate through schemes while staying kind-hearted is iconic.)
  • kindaichi shounen no jikenbo (classic mystery-solving drama with a nostalgic vibe. the cases are both fun and haunting.)
  • death note (live-action drama—light vs. L is always legendary. the suspense and chess match between them never fails to impress.)
  • bloody monday (hacking, terrorism, and intense suspense. miura haruma’s acting here was phenomenal, and the twists kept coming.)
  • kazoku game (a psychological family drama about a strange tutor disrupting a broken household. it’s dark but so well-acted.)
  • maou (a revenge thriller starring ohno and toma. it’s intense, emotional, and unforgettable.)
  • spec (supernatural crime-solving duo—quirky and action-packed.)

nostalgic and unique

  • orange days (deaf culture representation + college love story; heartfelt and mature. kai and sae’s journey is so moving.)
  • stand up!! (awkward teen coming-of-age comedy. the chaotic humor mixed with genuine life lessons was chef’s kiss.)
  • ikemen paradise (hana kimi) (cross-dressing girl in an all-boys school; pure comedy gold. nakatsu's inner monologues still make me laugh so much.)
  • 1 litre of tears (tearjerker, but unforgettable. aya’s story will always remain with me—it’s a reminder of strength and hope.)
  • yuukan club (rich kids solving mysteries—fun, quirky, and stylish. every episode feels like a mini-adventure.)
  • antique bakery (a group of men running a bakery together; unique and oddly comforting.)
