Today's fish of the day is the chinook salmon! I'm only doing this because some mysterious person mentioned it in my secret share! Ooooh!
Chinook salmon facts:
- The chinook salmon goes by many names, like the king salmon, Quinnat salmon, Tsumen, spring salmon, chrome hog, Blackmouth, chub, and Tyee salmon. The name "Tyee salmon" is reserved for individuals who reach 30 pounds or more.
- Chinooks are the largest kind of pacific salmon, some being able to grow up to 5ft! However, the average length of these fish is 3ft. This is the reason why some call them king salmon, as I previously mentioned!
- Like the sockeye salmon, chinook salmon change from a greyish-black colour to a vivid red during mating season. Another similarity these two kinds of salmon share is that they are both anadromous, meaning they start and end their lives in freshwater, but spend the period between those in the ocean.
- Some species of chinook salmon are classified as endangered, though the rest are classified as threatened. If you want to help, there are certain campaigns at naturecanada.ca that helps protect these species plus hundreds of others, such as the Protecting the Fraser Shoreline campaign.
Do you got that chinook in you?
