Why do pennys smell funny?
Pennies smell "funny" because the odor
you perceive isn't actually coming from the copper metal itself, but
from a chemical reaction between the natural oils on your skin and the
metal when you touch it; essentially,
the smell is a result of your body odor interacting with the copper
surface, not the coin itself having an inherent smell.

Did you know that they only smell like that if you touch them? If you leave them on a table and take a whiff from a distance, they won't smell funny.
