to preface this, i have no problem with ppl enjoying whatever type of music they like. calling someone a poser for simply liking a band or artist that has more than 3 monthly listeners on spotify makes you seem like a massive loser.
there are many different genres of music as well as many offshoots of alternative fashion, it’s great that ppl are able to express themselves freely within communities like spacehey. the major drawback with this is that these subcultures have become too mainstream. many ppl call themselves “emo” or “punk” or “goth” without understanding anything abt the cultures themselves. you are not emo for liking mcr, and you are most certainly not punk for liking green day. i understand wanting a sense of belonging, but it’s not cool to pretend to be apart of cultures you understand nothing about. please do your research before self identifying as smth you are not.

figsz !!
this is so real, id also like to mention a lot of scene / emo / punk people gatekeep tips for people wanting to get into the cultures and its honestly really upsetting that its kill or be killed pretty much, its hard to find a good source without being scrutinized for something small that you didn't know about and its hard

thank you 4 this blogpost holy shit

Ok before you read the rest I just wanna say that I mean this with no malicious or mean intent whatsoever!
So basically I have taken an interest in emo culture since I was a kid, but I never really knew how to get into since people always say that one needs to *understand* the culture and all that stuff to be emo aside from the fact that I'm scared to be called a poser once I get into it because a lot of people around me think that emo is cringe and all
Its just people who have been part of subcultures for a long time that make me a bit anxious because it feels like I'll never know enough to actually call myself a part of the subculture
But to be honest it annoys me too when I see people call themselves punk or something only because they have listened to ONE greenday song or somethin. Theres literally people in my surroundings that think being sad and wearing black makes you emo and that kinda stuff
anyways I dont really know how to end this comment so I just wanna say that I wanna be able to call myself an actual emo one day ^^
(sry if this comment doesnt make much sense)
to be a part of any subculture you just need to inform yourself about when it took place and why, if you have the same ideas and morals then you are part of it! thats the most important thing.

I agree with what you are saying. The only thing I want to enlighten about this is the problem whit "that kind of gatekeepers".
It´s important for newbies Whitin a niece to properly understand what it´s about , but I dislike that these people often fall under ridicule just due to their obvious lack of knowledge. Don´t get me wrong I hate people wearing band merch like clothing brands as much as the next guy, yet I still believe that teaching the individual about the culture should go before ridicule.
It´s at the point when the person consciously ignores the values of their "group" when it becomes a real problem. Ridicule at this point should then be reasonable IMO.

thats why i love the term "baby bat" for people newly exploring the goth scene. you have to LEARN about the community you plan on joining before you jump in and insinuate yourself
theres no shame in saying "i want to be punk/emo/goth". but you cant just do it. you need to know about it first. like, call yourself a wannabe first. ask people who are ACTUALLY part of the scene(s) you want to join how its done. otherwise, yes, you are just a poser
i see too many "punks" and "alts" listing mcr, p!atd, fob, green day, even msi as their fave bands... and i always roll my eyes because none of those are punk or alt. actually i'd specifically call them anti-punk. 3 of them are completely mainstream and the other is just... garbage
you can listen to whatever music you want but it doesnt automatically make you part of a specific scene. neither does wearing certain clothing styles/colors. its a lifestyle, not an aesthetic
