Alright, so as a blog idea I decided it would be interesting to create a sort of weekly maybe every other day kind of blog where I review games I own. And the very first game I'll be covering I Hotline Miami.
So, Hotline Miami is a game of adrenaline and gore. With a pixelated art style and 80s feel it offers a very specific type of style. However, its beauty doesn't just stem from this. Rather its addictive soundtrack, and incentive to try again. The game itself is straight forward. It goes as follows "You start at home, answer phone, go on mission and kill a bunch of bad guys, do a weird liminal type of prelude that takes place in different stores across Miami and finally you return home again. For the sake of not spoiling the games lore I won't be talking about the plot lines and the other in-betweens, as that's meant as more of a player experience then a read on a blog experience. The main thing you notice when playing is the neon environment and simple pixel sprites. However, the gore is another level. One of the most impressive mechanics I saw was the simplicity of respawning, there was no consequence of death, other then maybe losing a little progress. Instead, its just press R. this alone is addictive, but the combos are even better. Combos influence the player to do wild things, instead of just hiding in a corner. One thing I forgot to mention in the gameplay loop was the level performance rating part that takes place after a level. This shows how well you did but influences the player even more to go wild. Combos in most cases will play a huge part in that final rating, and if you don't go wild, your rating won't be as good. All of this combined makes an insane speed driven game on its own, but I forgot to mention the soundtrack. Now, most would think that a soundtrack doesn't really matter, but in Hotline Miami the soundtrack is another factor in this addictive gameplay. Perturbator (Great artist BTW) made my personal favorite songs in Hotline Miami's OST. However, another great contributor is MOON who make the hits that most people recognize.
I think this wraps up my first game blog, I hope you people can enjoy this. If you liked it leave a positive comment, if not don't be afraid to give me some feedback or just voice your opinion. This is Sleezy signing off.
NOTE: I know this one might seem barebones, but as I cover more games I'll get better at what I do, the more I do these. Also thank you to anyone who read this in the first place (:
