LONGLEGS REVIEW

„Let me in now, and it can be nice! Make me go now, and I'll have to come back! Not once, not twice, but as many times as I like!"

LONGLEGS / 2024 / A24

Welcome back to Art's stupid little reviews. I watched Longlegs last week and i havent been able to stop thinking about it. As a huge fan on Nicolas Cage's previous work in Renfield, i was incredibly excited for this one. I remember seeing the ads on tiktok and trailers on YouTube and being so beyond excited to see my gorgeous man return to the silver screen. And just like Heretic, I was disappointed.

We open with a very vague scene featuring Mr Longlegs himself, and our protag as a young girl. This becomes important later. Though not until much, much later. Like end of the movie Later. Anyways, we're introduced to Ms. Lee Harker, an FBI agent with clairvoyant abilities that is assisting a serial killer case. We very quickly learn that Ms Harker has absolutely no sense of self-preservation.

Listen, I'm okay with unaware protags in a lot of other movies because eventually they do something that shows that they prioritize their own life. Lee Harker does none of that. Immediately within the first 30 minutes we see her exit her home (she lives alone) to investigate a sound she heard outside. No locking of the doors, no texting anyone or calling anyone, just straight up walks out.

Moving on, we continue down a rabbit hole of oversaturated FBI investigation scenes, with Blair Underwood taking on an AMAZING role as Agent Carter. He is genuinely one of the best parts of this movie as he is a realistic and wonderful breath of fresh air. It's a bit slow at times, with the reveals coming later than I'm used to for an A24 film, but I was able to get through it without rolling my eyes, which I can't say the same about Heretic.

There are lots of scenes with Lee Harker getting disoriented or dissociating, which I've discussed with friends and usually show a lot of anger towards, but have been leaning more towards considering it a dissociative disorder. Regardless, it makes this movie a bit hard to watch.

The prosthetic work in this movie were also subpar unfortunately, as I had much higher hopes for a Nic Cage special. Overall I wouldn't recommend this if you're looking for a horror film that will blow you out of the water, but it's fun for an evening where you have nothing else going on and you're feeling a bit bored.
