social media is lame nowadays or i'm just maturing...

I couldn't help but wonder..., am I being a millennial nowadays?, i'm a gen z obvs but i can't stand social media anymore, is full of angry and resentful people, I mean i'm not a saint but i always wanted to give a positive background on my social media, everything was so simple back in the day of 2013 till 2017 at least, I used to enjoyed it, even being part of a fanbase, but now is everything like a competition of who has the best tweets, the best instagram post, or whatever, is tiring and anoying, nothing is organic anymore, everyone is trying so hard, I decided to be here at least a couple of months, I'm not gonna lie, i have followers and stuff but sometimes feels overwhelming and nothing is positive on there. Who do you prefer to be viewed as something that you are not?, why so much concern about how you are perceived?, makes me wonder if as a society are we destroying ourselves just bc we feel unloved and not appreciated enough?. Is like people is so aware of themselves that they can't even enjoy being themselves, i think that's why many young people do not want to upload pics of themselves on social media, i mean great you are a minor, don't do it, but at the same time, this feels like when we stopped playing in our yards bc there is nothing safe, internet should be a safe space honestly, not something to make other people bad about themselves, what kind of achievement is that?.

that's it from someone who reflects a lot hehe xoxo.

the human psyche wasn't really ready to invent algorithms or handle the intense and overstimulating technology/content that we have made for ourselves

kind of true with everything like climate change and weapons

this is so true, honestly i keep doing everything organic, without following my algorithm nowadays, this thing is exhausting, and so scary, that's why if we navigate towards the internet, we need to keep our curiosity alive and even create new things and art, not just tech, is too much.

If I had things my way, I'd make it so that social networking websites wouldn't have evolved past what they were circa 2003 - 2009ish.

I utterly DESPISE the addictive algorithms and people's shallowness as a result of said algorithms used in most of these sorts of sites in this present day and age. Instead of being forced to find things and people organically and being able to see different people's experiences, thoughts, and opinions, modern social media makes it so you're trapped in an echo chamber of the same exact opinions and find it difficult to find contrasting opinions of the same issue (I'm talking about simple things like clothing and shit like that, as a good example of this). Plus, on a related note, Google's search engine functionality has devolved to the point where it is essentially nonfunctional unless you want to have 300,000 sponsored links shoved into your face and their stupid AI overview garbage shoved down your throat every time you search for something.

There's a very good reason as to why I've chosen to become a member of this site and a bunch of message boards across the web that are still up and active instead of stupid Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, or any other repulsive modern mainstream social media website (except for YouTube, of course).

oh yeah definitely,,
i first joined the internet more towards the end of that good era of online spaces, (2013-2017 like you said,, i came around 2015ish) so to remember that time and compare it to now, yes, many people online now are just very insufferable, almost like they leech off drama. im lucky enough to have my own little corner of the internet and a community that very rarely gets "infultrated" by knobheads,, but its difficult to step out and meet new people and find friends, anywhere really, online and irl.

frrrrr, it used to be so simple to do friends on the internet back in the day like, nowadays you can't connect a lot, even on the intentions, people is seeking for some popularity or sum, I'm glad you have a good space fr, that's so cute <3 xoxo

2013 - 2017 internet isn't very different from the internet of today as of December 2024. You still had toxic cesspool modern social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat back then, plus those sites had already adopted the addictive algorithms that are still in use today by the end of this time frame. Web forums had become largely replaced by stupid modern social media sites by this point with most of them losing a good chunk of their userbase, and some even shutting down entirely, as a result. Over half of Americans owned smartphones by 2013. Social media had started heavily emphasizing likes and followers as opposed to actual online friends by 2013. Hell, people had even started using the internet to create and promote drama by this point (remember DramaAlert by Keemstar?). The enshittification of the web had already begun in the early 2010s and has only gotten worse since then.

The only major differences between the web from the mid - late 2010s are web game browser plugins still being supported on most browsers back then (with the most notable and latest casualty being Adobe Flash in January 2021), many popular MMORPGs still being around during those years, and the unmodded layouts of some websites like YouTube.

Now if we were talking about the web in 2003 compared to now, that would be a whole different story as the web was a much different place back then.
