This might sound main character syndrome-ish but I genuinely hate it when I try to look cool and awesome and amazing by pulling up a hobby or anything just to be hit with “oh, my [someone they know] can do that!” I DON’T CARE!
when you look at a group or a niche from outside it looks so tiny, like wow what a tight knit community! I’ve never heard of the word crochet before! let me learn in and the moment I mention it like “I’m trying to learn crochet!” Someone hits me with “oh my cousin crochets!” AUUUGHHH LET ME HAVE A THING
I studied Japanese and the SECOND I was kinda good and could hold up a small conversation suddenly EVERYONE learned a language! None of you knew jackshit before, where the fuck did your French come from?! “Oh we had an extracurricular in 6th grade” AND YOU DIDN’T MENTION IT BEFORE?! YOU HAD TO WAIT UNTIL I HAD MY OWN ACCOMPLISHMENT!?
I’m gonna find me an insanely niche and nonexistent hobby like fucking teaching worms how to do gymnastics and someone will still be like “My Brother in law works with bugs! He teaches them ballet though”
Also, I’m not getting hobbies JUST to impress others even if this is what it might look like from this blog. I usually learn things that I think are cool/impressive so when someone hits me with “SEEN IT, BOOOOORING” I die inside. I’m gonna start fucking bee keeping or be like one of those weird rich white men hobbies like going into those tight caves.

Oh damn, my father's long lost cousin's son's boyfriend had posted a blog just like this one! :D
Jk btw-
I do feel you on that one tho, js try not to let this type of stuff get to you. I think most people that mention how they know others with similar hobbies aren't tryna be malicious, rather they are tryna relate to you in some way.
Who knows, maybe they are hopin you'll also get to talk to whoever they mentioned and even make friends with them over that shared interest!
I know the feeling of wanting to stand out with your interests only to find out there are so many like you, but try to look at it from the bright side! ^^

the flip side of this is that, when you have a hobby that's difficult for people to get into, or not as popular, people will degrade you for it. i've started taking ballet lessons as an adult recreationally, and there is no shortage of people to mock me for wanting to "dress up like a toddler and wear a sparkly pink tutu" as if i dont wear black leggings every class... people are just miserable.

1. Ballet is so cool motte !!(°ㅁ°˶)
2. I did kinda experience this with cross stitching, “you’re collecting granny hobbies while you’re still a teen!” My head processed it as “Ohoho, grandmas are awesome (๑>◡<๑)“ my brain is wired against bullying ig lol
