Christmas Album Advent Calendar: Album and Single 1/26

This is an idea that I had yesterday of listening to a Christmas album and single everyday until Christmas comes and write about each one. I felt this would help me ease off the inherent disappointment I have during this Christmas season and help me get in the mood. Although I'm having to do 2 today and 2 tomorrow to catch up with the fact I didn't do it for the first two days of December.

Album 1/26:

A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector

A classic Christmas album no matter how tainted it is by Phil Spector's stink. The most well-known and ubiquitous when it comes to Christmas albums, and for good reason, to me this is the absolute sound of Christmas. The beautiful 60s Wall-Of-Sound polished production, with clear and gorgeous harmonies, the sounds of sleigh bells, and all of the classic Christmas carols. Obvious standouts being the Darlene Love and The Ronettes tracks, crazy how misogynistic Phil Spector was, yet all of his best work was with girl groups.
In my opinion this album has all of the absolute definitive versions of these classic songs, there is no reason to listen to any other version of Sleigh Ride aside from The Ronettes.
The only falter of this album is the last track, obvious for the fact it highly features Phil Spector having his mouth open instead of staying behind the damn production studio and doing his actual job. There is no real good reason to ever want to hear a murderer try to talk all sappy.
But still despite all of that this is still one of the most definitive albums when it comes to Christmas.

Single 1/26:

Wonderful Christmastime

Paul McCartney

This song is a very polarizing one, some people consider it abhorrent and kitschy, some people consider it a classic and a must-listen during Christmas. I personally enjoy this song but I very much get why people don't like it. It's a very odd Christmas song and very simplistic with lyrics that mean practically nothing. If I were to guess this song probably took 30 minutes to write. If you have the slightest bit of hatred of the holidays or towards kitsch, you probably find this song completely shit. I do quite like the sound of Paul McCartney plucking awkwardly at the synth, if this song was anyone but Paul McCartney this would've never become a Christmas hit, but I think that's really fun, it's silly and stupid but there's purity in that.

7.5/10
