Today's fish (sea creature) of the day is the giant isopod! I remember telling someone i'd write an entry about them like,. two months ago. Sorry, this is super late!!
the only bug I truly fw
Giant isopod facts:
- These deepsea critters are basically just underwater pillbugs. They're related to the roly polies we're familiar with on land, but they crawl around the ocean floor at depths as deep as 2000 meters!
- Many creatures who live deep underwater are able to survive for long periods of time without eating. This is because not only because the conditions in their habitats are harsh, but food is scarse. In captivity, one giant isopod in particular didn't eat for five years!
- There isn't a whole lot known about giant isopods, so their diet is somewhat a mystery. But scientists believe they're scavengers, and eat food morsels they find floating around, such as marine snow. Personally, I can't see them as very good hunters, so I agree.
- Scientists also speculate that one reason why they're so big is their lack of predators! If so, their life sounds pretty relaxed.
- Unlike many crustaceans, the giant isopod lacks a larval stage. Instead, they are immedietly born in the manca stage. (Think of it as like... the toddler stage for crustaceans who are born as larvae?)
- i cant find many more facts soooo did u know you can find these in animal crossing? Its not totally realistic cause you dive down to collect them... maybe the villager is just like. REALLY good at withstanding pressure and holding their breath
Shoutout to the person who asked if i want to eat whale carcasses with them. I'd love to. Thank you giant isopod. Kiss kiss!
