The Importance of Taste in Music, and the hate towards Taylor Swift

Now look, this is really random, but I'm bored and was just thinking about how Important others music taste is to us. Like when I look at someones spacehey profile, in order to decide if I wanna friend them or not, one of the first things I look at is their music taste to see if it matches up with mine. This is fine, until it becomes Personal.

I feel like for Years there has been a war on being Mainstream or not. There used to be no problem with bein a Swifty (Fandom name for Taylor Swift fans) but recently (as in over the past years) it's been weirdly frowned upon. Maybe that's because it's seen as basic, and boring, but I don't REALLY believe that's the reason (before I go on, i'd like to note, that Taylor Swift is only used as an Example here, and this is the case with many fandoms) I think the actual reason is, as I said previously, that it's becoming to personal. Anything negative said about...well really any artist with a wider fandom...is imidiately struck down by the fandom, any person saying something negative about the artist is attacked.

I myself would consider myself a part of multiple fandoms, but mainly I'm a massive Billie Eilish fan, and I've been a Billie fan long before she started to be considered main stream. I'd definetly consider this fandom a whole lot more open to criticism of her, but of course there will always be people within the fandom who won't be able to deal with it, and they'll go crazy.

Back to Taylor Swift, I definetly feel like this "obsession" with only positivity towards the artist is the most present among swiftys, causing the "hate" towards the fandom, obviously only small parts of the fandom goes towards the extreme. I'd say theres these 2 kind of groups within any fandom, the ones that casually like listening to the artist, and are interested in the artists life...to a limit. Then there's a second group, in which it really isn't about the music anymore, but more about the artists personal life, towards a concerning level, and I think the reason the hate towards Taylor Swift is so prominant, is because she has possibly the largest amount of fans in the world, and when there's a lot of people, there's always gonna be some odd/too invested people in the mix, who fit more into the second group, are a little to loud on the Internet, and then are seen as representing the entire fandom. Personally, I definetly wouldn't call myself a swifty, I just don't love her music. And I don't love the way her fans act sometimes.

But I do think sometimes we should all try and live togehter on earth and not care what anyone is listening too, as long as it isn't hurting anybody. And yeah, I'll admit, when fans get to obsessed with something, sometimes it does hurt people, like when they attack people (verbally or phisically) because someone said they don't like the artist, but as long as none of that is happening, I don't really think we should give too much of a damn.

If you read all this, thank you for listening to me rant, ily, I'm home sick today and just wanted to do something productive

Anywayss comment what music you like if u want, maybe we can friend each other then or smthn

People don't like Taylor Swift because her music sucks.
People don't like swifties because they are annoying.

There is a tendency in people to want to be seen as having Good Taste(TM), something I would assume is tied to the basic human need for validation. Following this there is also the tendency to get maybe overly invested in ones own interests and to view them as an extension of oneself. Thus any criticism of the interest becomes criticism (or worse, an attack) on oneself.

This I think is a fairly normal thing for young people especially (tweens, teens and even early twenties sometimes) and thankfully something they often grow out of. Worrying is when grown ass adults act like this (arrested development? self esteem issues? or something else entirely maybe, who knows). That is unfortunately not uncommon (can be seen in comment sections, especially for various music related "fandoms") and harder to look past than in the case of the young folk who have ample time to grow out of such things.
