First the story:
So I went on a “family weekend” trip. This is something my family has been doing irl for decades, around easter. This time it was during summer.
So we went to this place, it was like a desert. There was one road that was a dead end.
Along this road were a ton of different religious buildings. A lot of them looked really old and abandoned, but some were still actively being used. They were mainly all museums and places to generally look around though. Me and my family pulled up there and just started walking down the road, looking at the different [massive!!!] places of worship. There were a ton of people there, so it was clearly a tourist destination.
After a nice morning of walking through a bunch of different old buildings and my mom
playing the tour guide [she’s a historian], we went to a different city in the area to explore and eventually have lunch. The temperature was nice btw. We were all in summer clothes, but not sweating. Whenever we went into a building it was kinda chilly like in a cave.
Once in the town, we all kinda split up to just go around and explore before meeting and
having lunch together. Me, my little sister, and my dad spot this abandoned cathedral nestled in between the buildings [it was a very mediterranean town, think Sicilian coastal towns]. The giant doors were somewhat closed, one of them had half fallen off it’s hinges and left a small gap for us to get into the cathedral. Inside, everything was very dark as there were no windows or lights. The only light came from the entrance and the altar to the right of us. The ceiling above the altar had collapsed at some point, leaving a giant hole that cast a big beam of light onto the benches. Everything was covered in dust, to a point that everything looked grey. There were marble floors and all the furniture/attributes were a dark wood. I had my fancy camera with me, so I immediately started snapping pictures while my dad and sister just kinda walked around, gawking at the place.
Suddenly we heard a noise and a person rapidly approached us from a dark corridor, saying something in a language we couldn’t speak [presumably the local language]. We all realized we were very much caught trespassing and had to get the hell out of there. My dad and sister were relatively close to the entrance, so they dashed out, but I was further into the building to get a better angles of the altar. The man grabbed me by the collar of my shirt as I realized he was a priest based on his attire. He started talking to me in a calm, but rapid tone. He demanded “What are you doing here.” I decided to just play along with him as I was probably on his property. I managed to ramble “We- we were just curious, sir! We were just exploring! I- I was taking some pictures! We weren’t stealing or breaking anything I promise!” He replied cryptically “This place is dead. Empty. Forgotten. Why are you in our home?” I gave him a confused look and retorted “Your home? Sir this cathedral is abandoned, you don’t live here anymore I presume?” At this point I was convinced that I was either talking to a lunatic squatter or the ghost of a dead priest.
The man sighs, “We do not believe in a god. This is the house of the devil now. It was once ruled by those who worship their false creator, and now that they have discarded it, it is ours to preserve and use to our heart’s content.” It takes me slightly by surprise, but it also seems to click somehow. This dark and dusty place would indeed be a great place for secret religions, combined with the fact that it was already built to be a place of worship, it seemed so perfect.
“Now go. You are not welcome here.” The man hisses at me as he waves me away. I nod and mumble a thank you before hurrying out of the door with my camera in hand. My dad and sister wait for me outside of the building and seem relieved when I appear from the darkness. We decide that that has been enough exploring for today and head back to the place we all promised to meet for lunch, silently agreeing to not tell anyone about what we did.
There was a little bit after that, but it isn't really an important part of the story. We just arrived at our B&B and i had a cool room lol.
Now for the visuals!
This is what the priest looked like. Upside down triangly build, in his 40s/50s, kinda tall. His hands were very cold, despite the warm weather.
This is what he was wearing, but with the sleeves rolled up.
These two kinda look similar to what he looked like, except his hair was greying at the roots. He was very pale too. I got a stern, but understanding vibe from him.
Some messy sketches of what the front of the building looked like.
This is kind of the style in which the build was, except that it was completely grey.
The inside of the building. Those stripes on the topdown are stairs. The corridor was higher and the altar room was lower. That thing next to the altar is a person for scale.
Vibes of the cathedral [im not scared of the dark, so i didn't perceive this as scary, only cool]
What the town looked like. Basically just Sicily, lol. It makes sense, cause I went to Sicily last summer.
I was so sad when i woke up in the morning and realized I didn't have those pictures T_T they were so cool dangit
