A GUIDE TO SANRIO CHARACTERS!
...and a little bit of fun facts.
Sanrio has charmed the world with its adorable characters since the 1970s. The company was founded back in 1962 on the philosophy that a small gift can bring happiness and friendship to people of all ages!
Whether you're a seasoned fan like me or a curious newcomer, here's a quick guide to the iconic and very lovable Sanrio characters...
❤︎ Hello Kitty
Debuted in 1974, the face of Sanrio, Hello Kitty - who's real name is Kitty White - is a cheerful girl who loves baking and making friends. She lives in London and has a twin sister named Mimmy.
૮₍ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ₎ა Fun fact! She has no mouth to allow fans to interpret her emotions freely ^^
❤︎ My Melody
Debuted in 1975, approximately a year after our star Hello Kitty, this sweet bunny from the forest loves baking and wearing her signature red hood (which has been switched to pink multiple times). She's kind-hearted and is often accompanied by her best friend Flat the mouse (click on his name if you'd like to know more ^^)
૮₍ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ₎ა Fun fact! Her character was inspired by Little Red Riding Hood!
❤︎ Kuromi
Her debut was in 2005, she was created to be My Melody's mischievous rival. Despite her tough, punk-rock style though, she has a softer side and secretly loves writing in her diary (how relatable).
૮₍ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ₎ა Fun fact! Her favorite food is pickled plums...yuck!
❤︎ Cinnamoroll
One of my personal favorites hehe, debuting in 2001, there have actually been a lot of questions as to what kind of creature he's supposed to be...Well, he's a fluffy puppy with long ears and a cinnamon roll shaped tail (hence the name). He's known to be shy, but also curious and often floats through the sky using his ears..!

❤︎ Pompompurin
Created in 1996, this golden retriever in a beret loves napping, eating pudding (the last part of his name purin is basically the Japanese pronunciation of the English word pudding) and spending time with his friends. He's all about relaxing and having fun.
૮₍ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ₎ა Fun fact! His best friend is a hamster named Muffin (again, click on the name if you want to know more ^^)
❤︎ Badtz-Maru
Another one of my personal favorites, debuted in 1993, Badtz-Maru is a sarcastic penguin that lives on Gloomy Island and has a rather rebellious streak. He dreams of fame and actually has a lovable charm.
૮₍ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ₎ა Fun fact! His name means XO in Japanese, symbolizing his quirky personality.
❤︎ Keroppi
A cheerful frog debuting in 1988, who loves playing games, singing and adventuring with his siblings and friends.
૮₍ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ₎ა Fun fact! But also not that surprising, he's an excellent swimmer!
❤︎ Chococat
First shown in 1996, this black cat is curious and tech-savvy aka for some reason is good at understanding modern technology. He gets his name from his chocolate-colored nose and loves exploring with his friends.
૮₍ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ₎ა Fun fact! His whiskers act like antennas to pick up information! (Probably better than my wifi!)
❤︎ Little Twin Stars - Lala (pink) and Kiki (blue)
These starry siblings are celestial beings who debuted in 1975 and were made to bring dreams and good luck to Earth. Kiki is playful, but also believes he should be protecting his older sister Lala who is sweet and caring.
૮₍ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ₎ა Fun fact! They traveled to Earth from the Land of Stars.
❤︎ Aggretsuko
Unlike the other characters, Retsuko (who's name gets mixed with the word aggressive because of her stressed nature) is pretty recent, only debuting in 2016. She's a red panda who vents her frustrations through heavy metal karaoke and is an icon for adults juggling work-life stress.
