After losing my job and becoming depressed to the point of barely leaving my house, I kept thinking "Hey! This will make a great backstory for whatever I make next". But the thing is I haven't made anything since August. My music sort of acts as a personal diary, so I have to have some sort of life experience and be hyper-focused on being creative. Depression, of course, makes everything uninteresting and my brain is tired all the time. The whole idea of "the tortured artist" and having mental illness making you a better artist really needs to die out, including the modern evolution of that idea of the online bedroom pop artist who's a neurodivergent NEET. And what they make is more raw and real because of that. What makes art "good" is subjective. But we need to start saying that the work of Daniel Johnston or Ulillillia isn't good because of their struggles. But because no one else could have made what they have made.
