to start this off, just a quick disclaimer: all of these thoughts are purely to express mild frustration. i don't mean to villify the writers and if you like the last season of the show then i'm glad you do :] there will also be spoilers for all of wwdits up to this point in this. so if you aren't caught up or don't want spoilers, then don't read
first, to share my thoughts on season 5. i was disappointed with the djinn storyline in season 4 and some things were played for laughs that i felt shouldn't be, so i fell off of watching at the end of that season. but i saw the first couple episodes of season 5 on a last-minute plane ride to los angeles to see dan and phil and they felt very fun to me! i watched the rest of the season, and i really enjoyed it. although i was a little disappointed that they retconned the whole "killing the vampire that turned you also kills you" thing and killed derek, i thought the ending to that season was a great setup for a new season.
to get one thing out of the way first, there have been multiple bits this season that feel plainly offensive. after watching the first episode, i enjoyed it, but my main thought was that the episode would have felt much more interesting and also more interestingly written if the whole fatphobic bit about colin robinson hadn't existed. what was the joke? that he was fat? ok. there have also been a couple instances where characters (especially nadja assimilating with humans this season) make offensive "jokes" that are clearly intended to poke fun at real people who make those jokes. while this is somewhat fine, it feels both repetitive when it happens so many times and just grating at a certain point. the last episode was kind of the nail in the coffin with this for me, both with nadja showing up to say borderline offensive things constantly and with the entire "joke" just being the perceived awkwardness of swinging/potentially kink depending on how you read it
in another overarching pattern this season, it feels like they're just bouncing from trope to trope, desperately trying to find ones they haven't used yet. although this is obviously what the show has been for a while, a big difference is that there is no real character-developing plotline through this season besides guillermo sorta-kinda having a job every other episode. sure, it's kind of fun to put the vampires in a situation where they have to deal with a tv show, or have to find sean a job, or if laszlo's father shows up, but every episode this season has been a one-episode bit. when they introduced jerry and him working with the guide in episode one, i was like, great, a new plotline! he's barely appeared since. it feels like nothing is developing and they also are too afraid to do anything that is based on the extensive worldbuilding they've done in the past five seasons. there are so many vampire tropes they could play with that would be interesting! and yet. and yet.
for the elephant in the room, what is going on with nandor and guillermo. do i think they should become canon? yes. do i think this needs to happen for every ship? no! i do think it should happen for this one because 1. the two of them are literally central to the show and other characters' development 2. it makes very little sense to end it without at the very least addressing what the fuck is going on between them and 3. i think both of them deserve itÂ
with that out of the way, it felt like their dynamic in the beginning of the season was very promising, and then quickly deteriorated. they were going for a "jealous exes" thing and then...that seemingly dissipated. now nandor is infatuated with the guide. this would be fine if it was one of those situations in which nandor becomes obsessed with a love interest as a replacement for guillermo, but i'm doubting the likelihood of that being the intended storyline with each passing episode. guillermo is barely the focus recently and we're not getting any of his thoughts on all the weird shit that happened in the sleep hypnosis episode either? ok.....???
overall, things just feel really disjointed to me and i'm really craving cohesion and answers in the last few episodes, although i have my doubts. feel free to comment your own thoughts ^_^
