If you are one of those people that feel Spacehey is kind of a quiet place in terms of activity, you are not wrong. A ton of comments I see compare Spacehey to the old Myspace but not just on a functional level, but how active the old Myspace was compared to now with Spacehey.
That brings me to why I wrote this blog...
Engagement
Cambridge University defines engagement as an interest:
Engage: verb (INTEREST)
Definition: To cause someone to become interested or involved in an activity, or to attract someone’s interest.
Engagement is important in any social activity, whether it be digital or reality. Without engagement, life becomes dull and oblivious. Without engagement, we wont have surprise birthday parties, or nice gifts on our birthdays. Without engagement, your friends think you don't like them, or worse, your wife.
Websites like Facebook understand the importance of engagement, and so does the great world of media that we spend so much time consuming. That is why we consume it. But Facebook writes Ai programs to do the engaging for us. We become accustomed to convenience and scoth at the idea of engaging from our own free will.
Now let us talk about Myspace:
I was there. I was in my twenties when it was at it's peak, and everyone had pages. But there is something we need to remember. We were of a different generation. We grew up without computers and played outside. Computers and internet were for rich people, they were not cheap nor accessible easily. Most of us did not have cell phones that could connect to the internet. We relied on desktop computers and that meant that we were only on Myspace when we were home and in our PJ's. So we valued our time there and made the most of it while we were there. Plus you have to understand that there was nothing like at the time and the technology involved was mind blowing to us. It was a very exciting time for bands especially as hiring a web designer was too expensive in those days. It wasn't too hard to get your tech savvy friend to get the HTML done and your band would have a cool page for fans. Nothing else gave us that...
Now back to now
Spacehey has brought back what Myspace delivered. They did a great job of it too. But don't start thinking that Spacehey can bring back the people and the environment that Myspace lived in; That experience we had was a product of the time we lived in.
What does engagement have to do with anything you ask?
It highlights what kind of people were active on Myspace. We were an engaging bunch all excited about the future. The people I see on Spacehey are of a different nature... The people of Spacehey are fed up with other social media sites. Plus introverts are in large numbers. These circumstances lead to an unsettling result: lack of engagement which leads to a dull experience for everyone involved.
The solution?
Go live life. Experience, educate yourself, travel, and most of all, engage. Engagement is what makes life fun. Without engagement we dwindle into withering flowers. And with all the experiences you create, you will have many engaging stories to share on social media.
