Music Diary 5: Relistening to View Monster by Lemon Demon

Hi, SpaceHey! It's been a while, huh? I've been busy with college n stuff. But anyway, last night I listened to View Monster in full for the first time since middle school! This album has always been my favorite out of Neil Cic's discography (at least on the Lemon Demon side). I was so happy when I found out that there was actually a form of commentary on the old View Monster website! Of course, all art is up to interpretation, but I love hearing it straight from the horse's mouth and know what was going on in an artist's head when they wrote the lyrics. Actively reading the lyrics and commentary along with the songs heightened the experience for me.

Ask For Nothing and Bill Watterson were my favorites back in the day and remain so. Learning that AFN was about agnosticism actually made a lot of sense. I had trouble interpreting the lyrics back in the day, and now that I understand what Neil was going for I appreciate the song a lot more. It's comparatively deep when put against his other songs (not to discredit his other songs tho), which drew me too in the first place. I love this song a lot if you couldn't tell, it feels like laying in bed in the dark and looking out of your bedroom window.

Some songs I gained a new appreciation of include Gadzooks, The Afternoon, and The Machine especially! This was also my first time listening to many of the bonus tracks, of which my favorites were Modify, Sundial, and Today's Secret Word.

I highly recommend listening to this album in full with the inbetween and bonus tracks, alongside reading the lyrics and commentary. It makes for a very full experience. The album's about an hour and a half if you do that, so it's kind of like watching a movie!

I love this album so much I'm honestly super tempted to buy a View Monster CD, but I still need a device to play it on. Perhaps I'll ask for a portable CD player for xmas.
