Hello little stars :)
The Gyaru Subculture
Gyaru (ギャル) is a Japanese fashion and lifestyle subculture that emerged in the 1970s and gained significant popularity during the 1990s and 2000s. The term "gyaru" is derived from the English word "gal" and refers to young women who embrace bold, glamorous, and rebellious styles that break away from traditional Japanese beauty norms.
The Gyaru Fashion
1. Mini Skirts:
- Often plaid, denim, or pleated.
- A staple for many gyaru looks, paired with over-the-knee socks or boots.
2. Oversized Sweaters or Cardigans:
- Common in kogal (schoolgirl-inspired gyaru) styles.
- Worn over blouses or dresses for a cozy yet fashionable vibe.
3. Platform Shoes:
- Ranging from chunky sneakers to knee-high boots.
- Platforms add height and drama, a signature of gyaru.
4. Crop Tops and Tank Tops:
- Especially prominent in agejo (sexy, glamorous gyaru) and amekaji (American casual) styles.
- Paired with statement accessories for a bold look.
5. Decorated Jeans or Shorts:
- Denim with rhinestones, embroidery, or patches is popular, especially in himekaji (princess casual) and rokku (rock-inspired gyaru).
6. Layered Dresses:
- Often floral or lacey in hime gyaru (princess gyaru).
- Paired with elegant accessories like pearls and bows.
7. Statement Outerwear:
- Leopard print coats, fur jackets, or bomber jackets depending on the substyle.
- These add flair and complete the outfit.
8. Socks and Leg Warmers:
- Over-the-knee socks or scrunched leg warmers are iconic, especially in kogal styles.
- Usually worn to emphasize long legs.
9. Accessories:
- Chunky jewelry, big bows, and decorated nails (often 3D art).
- Sunglasses, hats, and hair extensions also play a huge role.
