Psychobilly Around The World 8 (Austria)

I basically write into a void to at least get things out into this creative space. Fortunately I feel the wherewithal to begin producing a PHYSICAL ZINE starting with a Western EU volume!

I have some really interesting articles on the origins of the genre, some great resources for learnign about the history and more all lined up so be fucking ready (The Meteors come into my town in January so maybe an interview????)

Anyways, heres the lowdown on Austrian Psychobilly.

Austria

1.Sir Psyko and His Monsters- Till The End (2012, Crazy Love Records)

This album deals a lot with life and the troubles we endure in it. I think the title is apt for the determination oozing off this record and its song’s voices. Western influences including on “Lonsome Rider” and “Pistolero” in the form of spaghetti western chords, whistling, and a prophetical trumpet absolutely kill it! The blowback into straight psycho madness afterward is astounding, though the themed thread ties everything together perfectly. The clean voice sits really nicely within the instrumentation; the sharp slap and genuine crunch on the guitars, it all builds together into a lovely psychobilly production that feels textbook and then some. I’m always a sucker for everything Sir Psyko put out, and I always love a good western influence, so this record is a Dogwolf melter.

Kitty In A Casket- Back To Thrill (2011, Wolverine Records)

A lot more punkabilly than I’m usually comfortable with, but this album definitely maintains the spirit similar to later Tiger Army cuts. Kitty In A Casket are a fine group of female-led slap-happy rock hailing from Austria. This album in particular has that really great bass that basically makes a mover out of any tune. Songs like “Monster Highschool Party” and “Run Run” get this dogwolf absolutely shaking. It all has a kind of pop-punk veneer that I really don’t dislike for this record because of the awesome, creepier elements in the theming and lyricism. Her early stuff is always on some time, but this has all the interesting novelty expected out of any debut record!
