Alt ramblings

When living in a society where alternative lifestyles gets more and more common, and everyone and their grandma wants to be the most obscure person that ever lived because they're tired of being called normies I can't help but think that we're actually going backwards, in terms of who's "real" and who's not.

This is a song that I think explains it pretty well, it's sung in Swedish so most people here probably won't understand it. But what it's basically about is prejudice among those who claim to be against prejudice. He sings that he can't wear a basic tshirt and jeans among other punks, because then he's not a part of them.

It's a song from the 80's and the only thing I can think about is that it's only become worse in recent years. This phenomenon exists not only within the punk scene but in other subcultures as well. Today I don't think you can call yourself anything unless you look the same as everyone else in that subculture, but deeper knowledge of the culture among many members are usually very limited. Fashion is the thing that seem to matter the most, because that's the thing people immediately see.

Then if you add the fact that random people take inspiration from these subcultures and dress the same (because of trends, bad reputation of certain subcultures being forgotten etc), you suddenly have no idea who's actually a part of the subculture (if you consider the look to be what is most important).

In the end you realize that the people in tshirt and jeans who knows their stuff are the real ones, because they're not obsessing over the fact that people are viewing them in a certain way, they don't care if they don't always look the part, because they already know their place within the subculture.

What was the point of this post you may wonder? Idrk, these are just things I observe and think about from time to time.
Sorry if none of this makes sense (^^;)

I’m starting to see this too, i feel like subcultures are seen more and more just as quick trends or aestethics/core and is usually forgotten that some of them are also heavily based on political belief and not just on the fashion and how you look

Yeah. The look is a way to show you belong to a group, so it is of course important too, but sometimes some people think it's the only thing that matters and they forget everything else.

This is something I've been noticing too. Everyone is so focused on being the most unique and looking the most alt that everyone forgot that we're all here to have fun.
