I Just read the 'Mercure de France' and while reading, I came upon the subject proposed by the Academy of Dijon as a prize essay for the following year:
"Has the progress of the arts and sciences contributed more to the corruption or purification of morals?"
The moment I read those words, I beheld another world and became another man… I'm in a state of agitation bordering on madness.
