Hello, Internet!
As stated in the title, today I am writing about my experience with the viral Tsubaki Premium Ex Repair Mask, and answering the long-awaited question of potential buyers-- "Is it really worth the hype?"
Before we start, it's important to consider your hair type. Is it thick, medium, or thin? Curly, coily, wavy, or straight? What about its porosity? If you're not familiar with your hair type, I encourage you to take this hair type quiz and to test at home for hair porosity, abiding by these instructions.
All my life my hair has been beastly, for a lack of better words. A total contradiction to itself (and possibly human biology), I've been blessed and cursed with thick, wavy, low-porosity hair. I never really knew how to take care of my locks, so growing it out it always looked frizzy and comically unkempt. You'd think it couldn't get much worse, but then it sure did... I got highlights, too! My family would often tell me not to ever bleach my beautiful virgin hair, but one day, out of rebellion, I went to the salon and asked for the harshest, lightest bleach treatment. And to be honest, to this day I don't regret it. I love the blonde! Bleached hair can look great if properly handled, but I didn't take good care of it. It looked good for the first month, but then the frizz returned with more anger than before, and I got crazy split ends. This is my hair at rock bottom:
Yeap... That's rough. I was ready to try anything to fix my damaged, brittle hair. I was scrolling Pinterest one day when I came across a whisper saying, "My hair is so soft <3," with a picture of the Tsubaki mask in the background. While doing research, I noticed how internet-famous this mask was for treating dry, brittle, damaged hair! I was the perfect candidate! Before my purchase, I considered the fact that this mask was made in Japan, which likely meant that the mask was designed for thin, pin-straight hair, but looking at reviews from people with all different hair types, it seemed legit! I was eager to try it out when it arrived. I followed the steps almost perfectly:
- Do your normal hair routine in the shower (shampoo and conditioner, preferably in lukewarm to cold water to prevent drying).
- Apply the mask generously, from the scalp to the tips.
- Leave it in for a minute or two. I left it in for ten minutes in a shower cap due to my hair's porosity (or lack thereof).
- Wash out very thouroughly.
I could already feel, right out of the shower, that my hair felt salon-soft, before it had even started drying! I love the smell of the product, too. I don't even know how to describe it; the best way to describe the scent would probably be white peach juice. The smell lingered even after the wash, which I very much enjoyed. My first use, I let my hair air dry, and it really defined my beach waves without any frizz. I definitely preferred my second use, though, when I did my hair blowout-style. Then my hair felt super soft and clean! Either way, my dried hair felt and looked magically smooth. The mask even enhanced the shape and structure of my wolf-cut layers!
I give the Tsubaki Hair Mask 5/5 stars!
With the help of the Tsubaki mask, I'll probably get to bleach my hair even more, without the worry of it looking hideous! Here's what I urge you to consider before buying it:- Keep porosity in mind. That will really be the determining factor of how long you should leave it in, or perhaps even if you should purchase it at all. Hair with high porosity should leave the mask in for a minute or less, while low porosity should keep it in for much longer.
- I think the results of the mask look much better when blow-dried. Experiment with different styles and techniques to see what works for you.
- I recommend that you use a shampoo and conditioner that's free of sulfates. Sulfates are notorious for depriving hair of its needed moisture and beautiful color!
So, the Tsubaki Premium Ex Repair Mask truly lives up to the hype! My hair, once frizzy, damaged mess, now feels softer, smoother, and noticeably healthier after just a few uses. Whether you’re looking to restore moisture, reduce frizz, or give your hair some much-needed TLC, this mask is worth considering-- especially if you have dry, damaged, or color-treated hair like mine. If you’re on the fence about trying this mask, I say go for it! It’s not a magic fix, but it sure comes close. Whether you have thick, thin, wavy, or straight hair, this product can be a game-changer in your hair care routine. I’m excited to see how much more my hair can recover and grow with the help of this mask.
Would I repurchase it? Absolutely. Would I recommend it? Without a doubt!
Love, Abi <3
