this blog is specially pertaining to alternative sub-cultures and more importantly the TikTok-ification of styles typically worn by people in alternative music sub-cultures.
obviously a lot of these groups such as goth and punk are primarily music based sub-cultures, however they also have a political aspect when it comes to values held amongst the community. that being said the fashion is not a mandatory part of being goth/punk etc, by which i mean if you listen to goth music and identify with their values you are goth, and no amount of goth clothing and makeup can make you goth if you don't listen to the music and are against the political views of the community. so why there is so much discourse about how to "correctly dress goth" or other MUSIC BASED SUB-CULTURES is beyond me. the way i am seeing goth peoples comment sections talking about how their style is technically not goth, its "romantic pastel 1982 coquette grunge core". like aside from the fact that the style doesn't affect what you are, setting rules to categories what type of alternative style you have literally goes against the whole thing. part of being alternative was doing what you want and "defying" rules of fashion, so saying you cant call your style goth because the jewelry isn't goth jewelry for reasons x y and z is entirely redundant. the obsession over aesthetics when it comes to alt music subcultures is kind of ironic, and also so not what the community is about.
