i hate modern social media

made a tiktok telling people about how cool this site is compared to places like tiktok (are any of yall here from that post? that would be so cool if yes hiiii) and a lot of the post was just me complaining about how terrible modern social media is.

i think its CRAAAAZYYYY dystopian that we're literally told what media to consume, who to talk to, who to be friends with, etc, by an ai like huhhhh??? not only is ai trash and wasteful but it's also super innaccurate bc it doesn't think!!! it just takes in analytics and maybe a couple of tags on a video and is like "yeah this guy looked at this video for 12 seconds surely they'll like this mildly related video" which just means that half of the stuff you get is just heaps on heaps of the same content.

for example, if i get into a new game i like and look it up on tiktok then suddenly my fyp is just that game. it's nice at first like yayyyy i love this game but after like a day or two ooooohhhhhhhmmmyyyygoooodddddddd i need a break. the algorithm milks your interests dry which just isn't healthy for fandom culture.

the ai that recommends stuff also creates a bit of an ultimatum for creators: you can either make what's trending (trends that have been created by the ai), or you can get absolutely zero views. yes i am salty that the video i made only got like 100 views while my low effort meme post got 15k. but anyway yeah i don't think it's healthy that a creator platform distinctiveness creativity like what???

algorithms can't model my emotions,

dex

In my first blog post, I discussed the toxicity I've observed on other social media sites. However, after being more active here these past few days, the contrast is stark. People are friendly and thoughtful, which I greatly prefer. I enjoy the social interaction and freedom to express myself at length - something other platforms often restrict. Sadly, the prevalence of Toxicity is awful and the hate comments have gotten out of control like ones directed at Iron Mouse, on YouTube As ConnerDawg mentioned just this morning, people are being outright rude to her, seemingly for no reason other than not finding her content appealing. This behavior is so utterly disheartening. It's baffling to think that someone would take the time to engage in such negativity simply because they have differing preference People need to be more compassionate and respectful, even when we encounter content that doesn't resonate with us personally just simply move on instead of engaging with it to be nothing more then spiteful.

had to look up who iron mouse was and the song she made yesterday about the drama is so good loll. great response from her but it's a shame she had to make it in the first place. unfortunately hate gets attention and attention is what social media algorithms use to push content so yeah hate wins!

personally, i think websites like this and algorithms can coexist (°、。)!! algorithms are a little overdone at this point, but i do like being shown my current interests on some apps!! yet, websites such a spacehey are very important, too ^^ virtual ecosystem :D!!

I agree: I think that creating algorithms for discovery, at least its intent, makes sense, but it's overtuned for the purposes of capital. like, the reason why YouTube is so rough rn is because they're trying to get money out of it after a decade of not making anything.

it's hard because I think that making technology more accessible makes it easier for people to gain information and meet cool people, but the larger goals for companies like Google and TikTok aren't altruistic, but are based on being a business. it's a complex thing for sure...

truee actually one of the things i do think this site lacks is good fandom content. a lot of the time you'll have to coincidentally find a person with a pfp of a character you like or something. i do wonder if you can replace algorithms serving you content with groups dedicated to a specific fandom, but the popularity of those groups is probably gonna be pretty low since i don't think a lot of people actively check groups on here

ooh I really like your profile too, ada!

dextros, I agree that finding fandom content is harder, but we built fandoms before all of this and we'll do it again! lmao I remember doing RPing on Livejournal and Twitter of all things: it's just about finding it in spaces like these.

so, I did find a search engine that's updated by people through some trawling small web enthusiasts: I mean, it used to be that you'd hear about cool shit through things like word-of-mouth, which is why I think things like TikTok and Tumblr are helpful for extending that reach beyond just people you meet IRL.

I would love for groups to be more popular on here: if it's something you're into, maybe make a group yourself and have different forum page dedicated to specific fandoms? Idk - if this is the kind of internet we want to create, i.e. people-driven discovery vs. corporatism selling you stuff, it's really about getting engagement through connection and fandom's a great way to do that.

zzzzz yeah i forget how privileged we are now when it comes to fandoms. i was always the type to stay on youtube and watch compilations of fandom content rather than find it myself so i haven't had to be in the trenches up until my brain developed a little loll

i was definitely considering creating some groups for a couple of my more underrated fandoms because even if nobody joins it for ages i can just post in the forum a bunch by myself lmaoo

also i hadn't heard of any small web search engines before but i decided to look at a couple and damnnn the stuff you find is so cool. not having seo-ridden ai bs shoved down my throat is so nice

i personally found out about this website from tiktok(which im very pleased and very content bout it,its so cool in here :33) i think both type of social media could coexists but mainstrean socials are indeed very unhealthy and draining.
im also noticing subcultures and fandom cultures dying which is very saddening, every thing is turning into aesthetics and cores with capitalistic intentions hidden behind the temptation to buy more and to consume from by online users.

REALLL fandoms have been totally commercialized by now. a modern fandom today just cannot survive more than a year if it's not constantly receiving content because it's popularity will be attributed to a trend that's pushed on social media till it's drained and then people move onto the next thing. even the big fandoms are just capitalist goldmines to a lot of people, i'd know being in a fandom where to form a community you need to blast 2k on a fursuit.

I completely understand the feeling, i wish we can go back to the MC days where people we're creating their own content and ideas for the lore/fandom and stuff like that, it thrived so muh without the consumerism just the extreme enthsiasm of us the fans
