What happened?

Something I never understood and probably never will understand is why people pay for streaming services (movies, books, music etc). You're continuously paying for a subscription of something you don't own, that can be taken from you by the owners at any time they want.

Back in the day if you borrowed something (from a library or similar) like you basically do in this case, it was free. And in the cases you rented something at least it was only a one time fee which wasn't that expensive. Another example where you didn't "own" what you bought is when you went to the cinema, but then you didn't just pay to watch the movie, you also payed for the experience of going to a movie theater.

What happened with people wanting to get something for their hard earned money? Did the digitization of things suddenly make us stupid?

Because I grew up in a household where we only had physical copies of things I've never really experienced streaming, except for programmes that only aired on tv, but I believe a license for tv has never been free, so I guess that's a predecessor to streaming? 

Anyway I think ever since the start of the last decade (2010), when everything became more digitized, the general public's ownership in the things they bought were taken away more and more, leading to how it is today when people basically pay for nothing.

It's just so sad that people have been tricked into believing this shit is worth it. I think it's time that people stand up and demand more for their money!

Long rant again, sorry... Does anyone agree with me or am I just rambling?
