digital art archive!11!!!!1! (2021-2023)

!!CW BLOOD, MILD GORE!!

this is a little embarrassing to blog about, but i wanted to show my progress since i started making art digitally ^_^ i'm definitely still learning, but i want to look back and see how far i've come. i hope this can help any beginners who might feel insecure about their art!! lmk if you have any questions or anything.

don't mind the everchanging signatures, i've posted on multiple platforms using multiple urls or even blogs (in the case of my tumblr account). i promise i'm not stealing anyone's art, i'm just indecisive lol

also! the timestamps on these are dubiously accurate at best. i'm relying on social media archives because my file dates got really messed up when i moved devices. digging up all my old art was surprisingly difficult T_T

first installed procreate!! i didn't really know what i was doing, and i used it like i would traditional art because overlays, noise layers + other fancy functions confused me (in my defense, the only other digital program i used up to that point was chrome canvas on a touch screen computer monitor. yeowch!!!)

(~feb or march 2021) nice background! but all the empty space is a common theme. i struggled and fought with that lineart and profile... i remember watching a creepshowart video when i made this...

also the file was totally lost for a while because i deleted it everywhere and only found it on THE SITE WHERE I USED TO POST MY FANFIC.

(~march or april 2021) this is. sooooo hard for me to post publically. even though it's also been on The Fanfic Site for almost four years. yes voltron was my first fandom. yes i'm ashamed.

visible here are the typical quirks of an early digital artist: hidden hands, NO FACES (?), and the procreate syrup brush.

(~april 2021) my first tumblr post!! got really inspired by spicymochi's stuff. mayhem_art was my old url for everything :3 very nostalgic

(~may 2021) another tumblr post!! uwaghh this is so hard to look back at because i can see how hard i was struggling. don't like the shading now but i'm still proud of it overall ^_^

(september 2021) an instagram post of Eloise, one of my old OCs O(∩_∩)O still struggling with shading at this point, kept teetering between using a graphite or round brush for lineart.

you might also spot a URL CHANGE!! i've kept the "rain" part all this time hehe

(~nov 2021) a little birthday gift for one of my friends!! i remember posting it and being really happy when they commented on it :3

this was THE YEAR for my art. i was posting art online regularly, and i even made some tumblr friends (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ) i had proper inspirations for my art and i could finally set goals for myself. sharing my art was fun, and i started to make lots of it (this really helped me grow and learn!!)

getting hardcore into the jojo's bizarre adventure fandom also really helped my anatomy and style develop. they really don't lie that show makes you better at art AND gay /j

(feb 2022) fnaf fanart! you can see me trying out overlays for lighting here, like i did with my friend's birthday gift.

(april 2022) uhh yeah. i don't know how this happened either. but using multiple references, following a tutorial for the lighting, and learning about line weight variation definitely helped. i'm still super proud of this one!! wouldja look at that blending.....

(july 2022) this marks the beginning + evolution of what i used to call my "swaggy art style," marked by my use of the funny haha brush!

i had lots of fun drawing and got inspiration from everywhere around me.

(aug 2022) PROPER CROPPING AND COMPOSITION? A COORDINATED COLOUR PALETTE? A NEW STYLE AND BRUSHES? WAHOO!!

this piece and its multiple redraws have been my tumblr icons since it was first posted. i'm really fond of it (//´◡`//)

(nov 2022) getting tumblr mutuals really helped my progress, but don't be fooled, i still rarely did full-body drawings (and whenever i did, they would look stiff and awkward).

you can't see it very clearly, but my current url is in this picture :D woohoo!

unfortunately, i was in a bit of a slump around this time. i felt like i hit the ceiling and couldn't make my art look how i wanted. i think every artist goes through these periods, usually because they're neglecting a certain part of their art. in my case it was anatomy. odd anatomy affected everything: my sketches, my lineart, my shading, and my motivation.

the important thing is that I GOT THROUGH IT!! it took a long while and was a frustrating one-step-forward, two-steps-back process, but one i completed for the most part. i'm actually still working on it, to tell you the truth... but what's being an artist if not a Constant Process?

(jan 2023) this post actually went a little viral hehe. first post of mine to break 1000 notes! i was really happy :3

(feb 2023) around this time i went through a phase of trying to cover up all my mistakes with hatching or messy lineart. it isn't obvious here, but you can see it where their shoulders are pressed together and in their hands.

(mar 2023) see what i mean about the anatomy? the shading looks nice and dramatic, but it's held back because i didn't know how to shade the face, hair, or clothing.

(may 2023) AHH I LOVE THIS ONE!! it's my tumblr icon! the facial proportions are a little janky, but the art can really shine because there's minimal shading and maximum style~

around this time i dropped the funny haha brush in favour of 'scratchboard' from the sinix brushpack AND I NEVER LOOKED BACK!!1!11!!!

(aug 2023) my first art fight! really got a chance to work on my anatomy and shading. i was still stuck in my cell shading ways and allergic to soft blending, a thing that is Kind of Crucial.

(oct 2023) a wee post from my spider-man blog. more anatomy struggles, but you can see that i'm starting to struggle less d(^_-)b

(dec 2023) put all my knowledge to the test when i made new years gifts for my tumblr mutuals!

ahh you can see the confidence in my lines... NO MORE CHICKEN SCRATCH! NO MORE HIDING BEHIND HATCHING!!

that catches everything up to now! i'm blending softer, paying more attention to anatomy and accurate shading, and trying out new brushes. my progress was far from linear and is far from over. this doesn't even begin to account for all my traditional studies, sketchbooks, paintings, etc.

art isn't fast or easy most of the time, and your progression might look totally different from mine. i made this archive to map out my own journey, and i wish you luck with yours ♪(^∇^*)
