Okay so watching MK1 intros of all the characters I realized just how much the characters were complaining about Kung Lao’s ego to Raiden and that got me wondering why because Johnny’s ego is just as bad or hell even worse than Kung Lao’s and yet they don’t complain to Liu Kang or Kenshi they just tell Johnny that his ego is annoying and that is that.
So because of that I was confused and started thinking about the difference between Johnny and Kung Lao’s ego and why people were complaining about Kung Lao’s more than Johnny’s, but then I realized why.
Literally to summarize it’s because Johnny’s ego is a lot more fabricated and over exaggerated meaning it’s a lot more fake while Kung Lao’s ego is more real (I low key can’t explain it better but you’ll know what I mean). Ima start with Kung Lao because his is more simple.
Kung Lao has grown up being better at most things because he lived in a small ass village somewhere is Asia (not to be racist) and was even better at Raiden in kombat even though the only reason he didn’t win the the tournament was because he didn’t train enough because he was too egotistical that he would win. Having that mind set your entire life would make you have a big ass ego and make you think your better than everybody else, what the characters were annoyed about was the fact that Kung Lao was very vocal about it and in the intros 7/10 Kung Lao would say something about “If I would have won the tournament” and even so offscreen with the monks they are annoyed and bitching about his ego.
The reason the characters are so annoyed with him is the fact that Kung Lao genuinely believes that he is the best and better than most people and I also believe it also has something to do with Kung Lao’s age because he and Raiden are younger than everybody else in the game (about early to mid 20s most likely early) they perceive him as young and arrogant which make them a lot more intolerant of him. Also side note Raiden is his best friend and he is very humble to the point Meliana even said to Kung Lao “your friend Raiden is frustratingly humble” so it makes Kung Lao’s ego stand out a lot more when he is with him.
Just a little more about Kung Lao is that people think he’s egotistical and you can argue that he is somewhat arrogant but when he’s in situations like during Madame Bo’s test and when he was in outworld looking for Shang Tsung he didn’t do anything to show that he was better than Johnny or Kenshi since he was in a actual dangerous scenario and before Kung Lao was told that the fight at Madame Bo’s was a test he didn’t do anything that would signify arrogance or ego.
However it wasn’t until after the fight when Kung Lao showed some ego saying that “these guys couldn’t take us” until Madame Bo told him they were pulling their punches and going easy on them, though when Kung Lao is around more egotistical people like Bi-han or Johnny or Shao Kahn you can’t tell Kung Lao even has a bad ego because there's outshines his.
I’m making these two paragraphs because this paragraph is very long and that’s only the reason for Kung Lao’s ego and if his is more simple than Johnny’s this next paragraph is gonna be longer.
