The internet has been a hit ever since the release of phones, laptops and computers usually used for gaming purposes, I had a deep talk with my drunken father a couple weeks ago and mentiones how life was like in the late 90s-early 00s. He would tell me how he would go raving and disco clubbing, sure people would get drunk but it was not neccesarily like a frat party. People would dance, tecktonik was rather popular at the time, you would just meet up again usually at the same places, both my parents were both born in 2 seperate towns but they were rather small so it would not be unusual for people to remember eachother (people know me and I don't even know them), he (my father) has talked about how things started to get ugly ever since the internet rolled around, slowly but surely. I will not be talking about how phones eventually got popular but I will talk about the behaviour Ive seen people on the internet have, people have gotten way too comfortable on the internet and that is not a good thing, sure some things might be funny, like a funny name somebody has when playing a multiplayer game or stupidly funny videos, people would enjoy content and not think about anything behind it. It is now difficult for a lot of people to surf through the internet without mean comments. I just now came across this tiktok of a woman who was showing that you should love yourself, that she thought she would not make it past 13 but she is now 21,I am really happy for her,I am glad she is doing well. But seemingly a lot of people had to talk about her scars. I will quote some of the comments I have read
"where does this link take me"
"could not scan the wares properly"
"For what do you have discounts?"
"What you been counting score of"
"Go big or go home"
I believe that jokes are jokes sure,as long as it is with (especially and mostly, mainly) with friends and people you know are comfortable with the kind of jokes you make. People cannot seem to agree online anymore and it is sickening, sending death threats, shaming somebody for their body, their hobbies, their style. I have seen countless of people doing such thing and it should not be something as common as it is.
It is difficult for me to make friends in the current country I am living in (Germany), I cannot wear a piece of clothing that is black beause middle schoolers with actual snot showing will try and shame me and laugh at me for being emo. When I end up being friends with somebody, eventually they will try and talk crap about a random person who did not do anything in particular because of their high pitched voice or the way they word things. Even if not in groups I end up finding out that friends backstab eachother all the time, for no reason at all most of the time,or for the stupidest reasons ever.
I cannot enjoy a youtuber who talks about their life as a job and instead of finding comments about the situation all I see is "this did NOT happen" ??? I do not think that should even be your concern? believe it or not? the creator made such videos just to entertain the ones who watch them, they do not need to please you specifically. I understand that both kindness and hate are free but I have started to see less of kindness and more of hate.
I cannot watch cute videos of small children or even ANIMALS because the amount of comments saying "GYAT", "If there's a hole there's a goal" , "game is game" are actually insane,I could be scrolling for a couple of minutes and the comments would still be the same, that is some disgusting behaviour, I feel sick to my stomach everytime I see such comments,it has obviously increased so I am not as surprised now when I see them before.
Ever since the elections,I have seen COMMENTS,AUDIOS and VIDEOS of people talking about women and how men are happy women are not able to be able to abort anymore and that now its "your body,my choice", specifically that one audio that says
"Hey Bit*h, we control your bodies, guess what? guys win again. We will keep you down forever, you will never control your own bodies" I believe not only the audio is extremely disgusting, made out of a joke or not, such audio should NOT exist in the first place. People who agree with such statement is disgusting and should not be able to have the right to roam freely as much as they do.
Almost nothing that is on the internet is actually normal anymore, famous celebrities and youtubers, people who some grew up with now not being able to keep their hands away from children, this generation is not able to take anything seriously but if somebody says a slur they reclaim but they don't know they will get defensive and start attacking you,but the same people will go "crush" on actual criminals, children, animals or anything else. That is vile and everyday I hate the internet for making people feel so comfortable to say such things thinking it will be okay.

There's a quote usually attributed to Mike Tyson (I dont actually know or particularly care if he really said it) that gets commonly thrown around about the internet and how it has affected people, "Social media made y'all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it". While I dont generally condone violence I do think there's an element of truth to this.
As someone who's been online for a long time I can however say with certainty that none of this is really new, people have been saying vile, horrid things on the internet for a long, long time, probably since it started. But I do actually think in many ways the internet has become a lot worse in recent times, at least in some ways. Social media and the incredibly easy access modern technology gives us to online spaces has really changed us but I also think we cant simply put the blame on the online aspect. The increasing political polarization of society over the last 10 or so years is present both online and offline and I think that might be the biggest cause behind the increasing degradation of discourse. I cant quite put my finger on it, its a complex situation and I find it quite hard to really explain my thoughts on this but I do feel like these things are connected.
At any rate I do think you are correct in saying that these things are a problem and that we really should be better than this. But I also want to believe that things will get better, though I am prone to pessimism. I dunno, I hope my musings dont drag you down or anything, reading your post just got me rambling, I guess.
