what's happening in Valencia

This week, the Spanish Mediterranean coast was hit by DANA, a huge mass of rain and storms that turned into one of the most destructive natural disasters ever registered in the history of Spain. The most affected region was the Valencian Community (Comunitat Valenciana). This region is divided in three provinces: Castelló, València and Alacant, the two first being the ones that have suffered the most. Being born and raised in Castelló, I can only describe the situation as completely agonizing for us.

What actually happened?

The 30th and 31th of October, Valencia faced the consequences of its negligent government. The force of the rain and the water flooded rivers and broke bridges. In a question of minutes, streets were turned into rivers. Cities and Villages completely flooded, the force of the water took everything away. Cars, people, trash containers, bars' chairs and tables, everything was destroyed. This would continue until the next day. 

Many people were in their cars, going to work. Many others were taking their children to school. No one knew what was happening. Why didn't the government warn the citizens about this?

Days before this happened, meteorologists knew this was coming. The government only decided to say something HOURS before the disaster started, when dozens of people were already dead and many others had disappeared. Neighbours had to stay in their homes, watching as the water took their cars away, got into their houses, looking at dead bodies floating away.

The official count of dead people is only going up as the hours pass, but the government is purposefully lying about this number because they know it's their fault. Realistically, about 230 people have died in the last 48 hours. About 800 people are missing. Entire houses are now underwater. Many have lost everything. Lots of villages don't have electricity, clean water, or food.

What mesures have been taken? 

Practically none. The next day, many people were forced to go to work even in the disastrous situation. The corporations knew they putting at risk the lives of their workers. The media has tried to hide the identity of some of these business. Some of these are: MERCADONA and IKEA. 

Who is the responsible of this?

Mainly, the president of the Valencian Government: MAZÓN. A right-wing politician. 

What can we do about this? 

As far as I know, there aren't any donation sites available yet. But especially if you aren't from Spain, please learn. This happened in Valencia a couple of days ago, but tomorrow it could happen anywhere. The greed of the high class is infinite, timeless and universal.
