If there is one thing I absolutely can NOT stand, it's a Metal "Elitist". You know the type. They are the metalheads that scream at you if you aren't listening to ONLY black metal, or death metal.
Truth be told, as far as metal goes, I can only stomach those particular genres when VERY small doses. Like, almost non-existent doses. Oh, there's ALWAYS a time and place for it, but for the most part, I can't do it.
And that's not because I can't recognize the talent, but rather, because I grew up in the time of soaring (almost ear-splitting) vocals, insane virtuoso guitar solos and riffs, pounding drums and those simple, in the pocket bass lines.
But, I also think "DAD Metal" includes Megadeth, Slayer, Metallica as well as the classics like KISS, Motley Crue, RATT, etc...
And frankly, without those aforementioned Bay Area Thrash Bands, I'm not completely sure that black metal would exist.
Or, maybe it would. Death Metal was around in the mid 80's, albeit the kind of death metal where there were ACTUAL vocals, lol.
But, on any given day of the week, I'd rather jam some Iron Maiden or Megadeth, than most of the death/black metal out there today.
Who knows? Maybe that opinion will change, but I wouldn't count on it, lol.

As a 70/80/90's metal fan i can mostly agree with you. But a well made, melodic death metal can be really fun too! Children of Bodom for instance, made some sick compositions while staying within a genre. I hate metal elitists too, some of my pals used to say Black Sabbath isn't really heavy metal... -Bitch, they invented it! I personally don't care, as i have 70's disco and some death metal on same playlist, and i'm perfectly fine with it :)

For real! I have vinyl with everything from Slayer and King Diamond to Fats Domino and the Bee Gees and everything in between. Death/Black is VERY hit or miss for me, but I don't shy away from it at all. I try to always check something out first, lol! Shit, I even like Hanson and Milli Vanilli. No shame in my game at all!

Totally, some folks seem to forget that different music genres have roots in one another. Metal comes from blues & classical music, and so is funk to some extent. I may not get modern hip-hop but also i will not openly criticize someone just because he finds his own value in it as a form of modern poetry. Live and let live.

Absolutely. Did I mention I also have 2 Live Crew, some MC Hammer and even Vanilla Ice on vinyl? LOL! That's not even talking about what I have digitally or on cd. I love old school rap a lot. I don't get today's rap/hip hop, but who am I too judge someone for digging it?
