There are two that I remember playing quite a bit, but do not remember the names of either of them. They were a very common web-game back in the day. I guess it would be comparable to the Clash of Clans (I've never played it, so take it with a grain of salt)
The concept is basically gathering Wood/Stone/Food to grow your city population to build bigger buildings, and new features like Barracks, Research Centers, City Walls and the like. The one I played most like this was based around Greek civilization... As I'm writing this, I am almost 100% sure it was called Grepolis
The other was quite different from most, and was focused around planet exploration and mining resources like Gas and Crystals from planets to build Bigger ships (cargo, fighting, etc). I tried looking through https://www.f2p.com/ but could not find it on there either. If anyone has any ideas of what it could be, please let me know.
I do plan to start working on creating one of these Browser based MMORT, more so as a programming practice/project for myself. But I do hope people end up playing and enjoying it!

Aot of social media games were a lot like that. Galaxy life was very popular among those but I never played it and I doubt you mean that one, but of you arent a 100% sure it was running on your machine then that sounds like a valid place to look.
Your comment reminded about this post haha.
I just tried doing a few more searches and checking through a couple MMO websites,,, AND I FINALLY FOUND IT!!
IT was called OGame - https://lobby.ogame.gameforge.com/en_GB/
Looks like it's still up too! It's made by the same people that did Ikariam - which is another MMORT that I remember playing

Ah yea the company that brought us the game that gave me my name.
One of the most predatory microcrotransaction schemes in history, though they didn't change that much from back then and honestly it may not be as bad as modern gatcha, IDK. Certainly still very P2W for most of their properties, but I gotta give it to them - they don't leave things to rot away.
